I Like both the Mossberg 500 and the Remington 870. As you probably already know there are several models and variations available for each manufacture.
I sell both. I have both the Remington and the Mossberg listed at auction on Guns - Online Gun Auction - Guns at GunBroker.com for the next 5 days.
I can be reached at GundAndSupply.com Home

I would suggest a used 870 Wingmaster with 20in bbl.

I too use an 870 at work that I have to turn in at the end of shift.I carry the department issued Remington 870 in my squad car but have to turn that in at the end of the shift.
With that said, I have more time on the 870, because of work and training than any other shotgun. Therefore I keep my HD Shotgun the same as my work shotgun.
During the middle of a high stress life or death encounter is not the time to try to remember the manuel of arms for any weapon. It needs to become instinctive. Thus the 870 should be, IMHO, your choice since that choice is already made for you at work.
My rifle is the same as what is issued at work as well. It makes things simple. The only difference between my work and home shotgun is that my home shotgun has a pistol grip with a buttstock. This tells me that my safety is located on the left side of the gun, given that I'm a lefty. The other shotties, that don't have the pistol grip, have the safety on the original side and that tells me that I have to bring my gunhand up under the trigger guard to release the safety.

If not the 870 the mossberg 500. Tons on the market, lot's of accessories and they can take a beating. There standard or used to be army issue, there made to get wet and dirty, I had one for a long time but recently traded for a Remington 700. Mossberg 500 is pretty much the most reliable shotgun you can get IMO.
Vermont does not issue Permit/Licenses to Carry a Concealed firearm. Vermont allows anyone
who can legally own a firearm to carry it concealed without a permit of any kind.

Remington 870 is my pick. I have the 18 1/2" smooth bore barrel. If I buy another, it will be the combo model with 20" rifled barrel + 26" modified choke barrel.
I hunt with my HD shotgun so there is no trigger/safety confusion. No funny stocks or pistol grips either, it still has the original walnut furniture. I suppose if I used an AR in my daily life, or some other pistol grip rifle, have converted my shotgun long ago.
There is nothing wrong with Mossberg either. I know a guy that shoots better and faster with his Mossberg pump than others shoot an auto. I just started with Remington....
It all boils down to sticking with what you know.

Definitely Remington, either the 1100 Tactical or 870 LE.

If you get the 870, just don't get the 'Express' model.
I truly love my older 870. It's like a transformer. You can hunt with it or serious HD, which is the mode it's in now. 870 rocks.
The 870s are not lightweight, they are not made with "allow metal" they are made of steel.
