There's a price difference for a reason. Get the best you can afford.

    I'm partial to Armalites.

You can get one of these right now off Gunbroker for $900
    ( carbine or rifle )

So you want to buy an AR-15, huh? - Police Forums & Law Enforcement Forums @ Officer.com

I learned more from this than anything. Then I chose differently than the author, but I knew why.
I picked a Colt, because I didn't want to wonder if a Colt would have been better. S&W is fine, Bushmaster is fine. But learn first.
I didn't know about chrome lined barrels, staked gas keys, magnetic particle testing, bolt carriers, buffers. The list goes on. I still don't know much, but the Colt was near the top of the list.

In your poll I voted Danield Defense, you may also want to consider these as well.

    Noveske N4

    Colt 6290

I voted Daniel Defense - with the $250 you can get a good rail system (or whatever else your heart's desire from DD is) and come out with a great rifle that's partly tricked out.

Out of all your poll options, this is the only one I'd look at - it's the only one that is built to the basic specs/testing/QC of the M4 TDP... Then again there's those on this forum that have all but called me retarded for wanting a rifle built to some kind of specification...

I have 3 Spikes Tactical rifles. A .22, 9mm and 5.56 and they are as good or better than rifles costing significantly more. I shoot with a local PD and some of the officers have Colt and Noveske and they are envious of my Spikes rifles. One officer remarked that if he knew that the Spikes was going to be so damn perfect he would have kept the additional $800 in his pocket instead of getting the Noveske.

    The .22

    The 9mm and the 5.56

Yep... I found this after I bought my first AR, and was quite pleased to learn that I accidentally bought exactly what this writer recommends. A great learning tool every AR owner should have bookmarked...
