    I would take the shotgun!

I am the God fearing, gun toting, flag waving conservative you were warned about!

    The shotgun is more versatile.

That, my friend, is a much, much tougher decision. Can we get away with both??

    In general-

    Priority 1 - defensive handgun
Priority 2 - backup defensive handgun
Priority 3 - shotgun suitable for defense
Last Priority - a rifle or carbine suitable for defense

Start with the closest/most likely scenario, and work outward.
The number of people killed because they didn't have "enough gun" is dwarfed by those who had none at all.
