    Wilson follower for Rem 870

I recently installed a Wilson "green" follower in my 870 Home Defender and it reduced the tube capacity by one round. It will only carry 5 now instead of the previous 6 rounds...is this correct or did I get the incorrect model follower?

I can happen. The factory remington is a small plastic cap while the wilson is longer, mainly to keep the spring from kinking.

Thinking that was the case. I will keep it in place as it appears to do a better job keeping the spring running true in the tube.
    Many thanks.

It depends on the magazine tube length, and the length of the shells loaded. The Wilson follower takes up more space in the tube since it has an insert that projects into the spring. I have an 870 Express model, and stoke it with 2 3/4" shells. I could load six in the tube before, and after the Wilson follower. If I loaded 3" shells, my capacity would also be diminished by one. Sometimes a half inch will make the difference. Measure, calculate, etc....... Is it what it is.

Same thing happened to me, so I trimmed it a little. Works fine now, i.e. Six 2.75" shells.

The tail of the Wilson follower isn't what takes away space in the tube, it's the solid end of the follower. An extra power spring needs about 2.5" of space to compress and the tail of the follower is only about 1.25" long and it fits inside the spring. The solid end of the follower takes away about 1/2" space. If your shells are a little longer than standard, some are, and the solid end follower can cause a loss of a round in the tube. The factory follower is hollow and the spring fits inside so no space is loss.

Your spring might be binding as well.

Many thanks for the replies. Sounds like the part is correct and I like the design so I'll just get the job done with 6 rounds.

I went with the VCS Stainless Steel Mag Followers too. No round loss, no wear, no getting stuck, and a quick index for metal with a hole and I'm GTG.
