    Ammo section's up!

However, it'll read funny in two places because two quotes got lost in the shifting/editing.

    1) The first quotation should follow the line, "As Dr. Ken Newgard describes and Dr. Gary Roberts reports (also in the link provided above):"

Quote Originally Posted by Dr. Ken Newgard
“A 70 kg male has a cardiac output of around 5.5 liters per minute. His blood volume is about 4200 cc. Assuming that his cardiac output can double under stress, his aortic blood flow can reach 11 Liters per minute. If this male had his thoracic aorta totally severed, it would take him 4.6 seconds to lose 20% of his total blood volume. This is the minimum amount of time in which a person could lose 20% of his blood volume from one point of injury. A marginally trained person can fire at a rate of two shots per second. In 4.6 seconds there could easily be 9 shots of return fire before the assailant’s activity is neutralized. Note this analysis does not account for oxygen contained in the blood already perusing the brain that will keep the brain functioning for an even longer period of time.”

    2) The second quote lost is, funny enough, the list of recommended ammo. It should follow the line, "I present to you a nice, easy-to-read, too-long-in-coming list of good self/home-defense 5.56 ammo:"

“If Barrier penetration is NOT an important factor AND your rifle can stabilize them (1:9 minimum twist rate):
    • Hornady 75gr OTM loads
    • Nosler 77gr OTM loads
    • Sierra 77gr SMK loads

If Barrier penetration is NOT an important factor AND your rifle can't stabilize the heavy 70+ grain bullets:
    • Sierra 69 gr SMK loads
    • Hornady 68 gr OTM loads
    • Winchester 64 gr JSP (RA223R2)
    • Federal 64 gr TRU (223L)
    • Hornady 60 gr JSP
If Barrier penetration IS an important factor
    • 62 gr Federal bonded JSP Tactical (LE223T3)
    • 55 gr Federal bonded JSP load (Tactical––LE223T1 or identical Premium Rifle––P223T2)
    • Swift 75 gr Scirocco
    • 60 gr Nosler Partition JSP
    • Barnes all copper TSX/TAC-X (inferior performance through glass compared to a TBBC)

If using a short-barreled weapon AND your rifle can stabilize them (1:9 minimum stwist rate):
    • 70 gr Barnes TSX/TAC-X
    • 75 gr Swift Scirroco
    • 75 gr Hornady OTM
    • 77 gr Nosler OTM
    • 77 gr Sierra SMK

If using a short-barreled weapon AND your rifle can't stabilize the heavy 70+ grain bullets:
    • 62 gr Federal bonded JSP Tactical (LE223T3)
    • 55 gr Federal bonded JSP load (LE223T1 or P223T2)
    • 60 gr Nosler Partition JSP
    • Barnes 55 gr TSX/TAC-X”

Hopefully it'll be fixed sometime tomorrow. I may be able to knock out most or all of the maintenance section as well. A big thanks to the mods for their help so far.

BAC, let me know, by PM, when you are finished and if there are any edits/corrections that need doing and I will make them for you.

    Good work, by the way....

    Maintenance section's up!

Incidentally, I completely forgot about gas rings until doing this part. I'll add that to my list of future updates...

Next section's the "Cost/Benefit and Example Builds". For the bargain hunter in all of us.

Sorry for the delay; seems that this was the pre-Spring Break exam week. Kinda snuck up on me.

The "Bang for your Buck" (aka, "Cost/Benefit and Example Builds") section should be finished tonight or tomorrow.

    BAC,

Great job! The info is clean and easy to read. Now would you do one for AK's? hahaha........

Both are fantastic systems and I think a lot of people would dig this easy to read info on the AK platform too.

Thanks for this - having this resource on hand should cut down on heated debates that really shouldn't be happening.

I can't wait until you explain the chart - it seems to be the most misunderstood piece of AR knowledge in existence.

NOT forgotten...! I overestimated how much time I'd have outside of class for this, and will be rectifying that. Got all the critical areas done but everyone likes example shopping lists and enough people misunderstand "The Chart" that I figure it's worth an explanation. "Reference Material" is going to be part bibliography, part useful links I've found on the subject of AR-15 function and use. I'm also editing everything currently up to make sure it's up to my grammar standards and is easy to read (and that little formatting things are fixed).

    Appreciate the support guys.

BAC, I just got around to reading Part 7 - Maintenance. Yet another loud "bravo" for you. In particular, I am thrilled to see someone other than me harping about Pat Rogers' experience and sage advice regarding the AR maintenance. Such as, run the gun wet. I continue to be surprised by the number of armchair commandos who blindly advocate a white-glove level of cleanliness for the AR, as well as those who cling to the notion that the AR fared badly in Viet Nam because the gun had extreme maintenance and cleanliness requirements.

I'm a believer because I've done three trainings with Pat - and beyond a shadow of a doubt, the man knows whereof he speaks.

FYI, "Filthy 14" (the Bravo Company mid-length carbine) is now at 31675 rounds and started having some extraction problems as of last week's course in AZ (Mar 19-21). They'll replace the extractor and go from there. Pat's courses are the type of real-world experience that separates the Bushamster and DPMS carbines from the Colts, BCMs, Noveskes and others.

    Thanks again for your "opus"!

    Thanks Smitty!

Long time no see folks, but as of tomorrow I graduate and should have a little more time on my hands. Rough drafts are only supposed to be temporary, after all. Next installment will include three sample builds, a quick-list of good online vendors, and everything that can be priced will be priced. After it I'm torn between working through the edits or finishing the final, polished version and emailing it to Bumper.

Anyway, I'm back and looking forward to finishing this.

    Another long hiatus later...

As a brief (poor) explanation for my absense, my previous hard-drive died and come next month I'll be in the police academy. Seriously lookin' forward to it, but having this topic bookmarked and not polishing it up is now bugging me to no end. Tonight I'll have a polished version of what's currently done PM'd/emailed to a mod, and tomorrow I'll get crackin' on Part 8. I won't be able to do too much by way of example builds, given pricing and availability changes, but it'll be something.
