Pirate put it pretty well - I think I would rate the S&W at high/mid grade myself! lol. The higher end rifles, like Colt and Bravo Company are the ones that will be rockin and rollin 20 or 30 years from now with normal maintenance. The mid level rifles, bushmaster, DPMS etc will all be fine shooters and may last just as long, but when you start getting up into the high round counts parts will have to be replaced more frequently and you are more likely to start getting malf's due to screws coming loose and worn metal.

So in the short run they are pretty much the same - in the long run is where you are going to see the difference between high end AR's and Mid to low level AR's.

The standard M&P15 comes in A3 configuration with the removable carry handle and flat top receiver.

I just received an e-mail from S&W this morning and they are starting the same promotion on their MP 15's. The offer for the 5 free mags begins February 27 and runs through May 31, 2010. Check out their website.

Only 5.56/.223. Doesn't apply to their 5.45 model.

Take a look at this. The S&W seems to be on the upper end of the quality spectrum; Colt is still better though.

For that money you are much better off with a Colt or BCM. Buy the best.

Unless you're shooting match/competition with it or you're on an entry team, in which you would be using it to defend/protect yourself on a regular basis, the Smith is a great happy medium.

Heck, even if any of the above is the case, I still believe the Smith's quality is more than capable. It is a fine weapon and I'm not even a S&W guy.

Besides, if you're not one of those peolpe that have to keep up with the Jones', save some coin for ammo and/or training.

    Just my 2 cents.

I got a great deal on a new Colt 6920 for $1,000 last year and I am very happy with it. I have compared it with my pre ban Colt Sporter and there have been a lot of improvements on the 6920. I have compared the Colt to the S&W M&P and it looks the same . However the chart provided above really spells out the differences. Get the Colt if you can afford one.

If you ever plan on using PMAG's, they have a warning for some Smith & Wesson M&P15's owners that their mags may not fit well in those specific magwells. They are inconsistent in their sizing of the magwell of the M&P, it appears. FYI
