    Remington 870 Police Magnum

I just bought the 870 Police Magnum and would like to spruce it up a little.

I'm thinking of adding a heat shield but this barrel has the classic shot gun sights on it.

Can I even ad the heat shield or how do I remove these sights?

I'm thinking of adding Ghost Rings sights anyway once I figure out what I need to mount the Ghost Ring sights.

    Any suggestions?

Just got my 870 P Magnum in January. It now has one of these. It is beside my bed nightly.

How much is one of them??

I like the sights as they are.

If you have not already, suggest you take the nice 870 out and enjoy it.

Yeah, I can relate to that. But it works great. It arrived sooner than anything else I have ordered online.

Why remove the sights? Trade someone for a bead-sight barrel, if you really must have ghost ring sights. I prefer the factory rifle sights, myself, for slug shooting.

Leave it alone. Put a side saddle and maybe one of those lights.

No need for a heat shield, even if you're planning on doing 3 gun matches.

Here's my Remington Police & my wife's Mossberg (the heat shield was removed from the Mossie)

    Both have Side Saddles..........

no need for a heat shield, invest in a side saddle, and I highly recommend ghost ring sights - the ones that are on there give you a smaller sight radius... Other than that I wouldn't change much. Excellent Home Defense rig as is. So no hurry.

I found an older 870 PM (walnut furniture) in cherry shape on a Gander Mountain rack last Fall. My barrel had a raised bead only. I opted to put on a set of the Wilson (Scattergun Technologies) ghost rings. The sight picture they offer is very quick and still precise. (But, if I wasn't 55, I might just settle for the rifle sights on your barrel.)

I used to use standard Remington factory rifle sights to shoot slugs. I sold that shotgun a while back, and acquired a bead-sight 870P, and then a Scattergun Technologies 870 with their ghost-rind set-up. I find the ghost ring system slower to use than the factory Remington system. Accuracy is not the problem; speed is. Of course, my eyes are not your eyes, so make an effort to try a system before you buy. I wish I had done so!

I would skip on the heat shield. I've used 12G with and w/o them, and IMHO, it adds unnecessary bulk, although it does look cool.

The most affordable GR option are factory Mossberg Ghost Ring sight set with front JUMBO RED RAMP sight. You do need to get it professionally installed by gunsmith though.

Also, consider Vang Comp treatment for your barrel so that it shoots like a rifle with Federal birdshot and buckshot.

Also, would consider VC(Vang Comp) jumbo safety, ss follower, mag extension, front sling swivel, and side-saddle.

Also, get LOP adjusted to 12.5" for faster mount and get Pachmayr Decelerator installed on the buttstock.

Not to take over the thread but what are the differences between the 870 P and the Home Defender 870 other than the sights?

    Thanks
