Tell me why I should get an AR over a Mini 30?

Ok, here's the deal: I can't afford either right now, but down the road I think I want a rifle caliber carbine.

I've always like Ruger mini 14's/30's, and though some claim they aren't accurate enough, I can't imagine a circumstance I'd need accuracy any greater than human torso size past 100 yards for a carbine.

I'm not really a fan of .223, and the look of most AR platform guns just isn't sexy at all to me like the Mini's.

So...given that, do I have to jump on the AR wagon, or am I well served with the Mini 30?

Are there any AR's that run 7.62? That may sway me a bit.

yes the AR 10 uses the 7.62 NATO

    one big advantage for AR
The AR-15 mags are cheaper then ruger mags
There is something about firing 4,200 thirty millimeter rounds/min that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

I don't think the Mini 30 and AR are really comparable. I think comparing the Mini 30 and AK makes a little more sense.

The down side to the Ruger is the cost and availability of magazines and parts. The biggest draw to the AR platform is its popularity and modular design that makes parts cheap and easy to come by.

With that said, I do think a Mini 14 or 30 will serve just fine as a HD weapon. However, much of the initial savings is going to get eaten up by the added costs of magazines and spare parts.

The AR10's are great, but more money all around.

Yeah Sixto, you're probably right, but I just never liked AK's. At all.

I'm pretty far off from dropping the coin, but I really don't know what I want so I'm doing research now just because. I just always liked mini's for some reason.

I'm open to suggestions for other similar carbines.....

What about an SKS? They are very inexpensive and would be a great first carbine style rifle.

I don't recall seeing any SKS that looked that nice! Did you do the finishes yourself?

Ooooh, now those are some impressive looking SKS's.

Another plus in the SKS's favor Arko is that you can find plenty of inexpensive add-ons for it. Not to mention the ammo is still cheaper than .223/5.56 by about $150 a case right now.

They do look pretty nice, but I think I'd prefer a magazine fed gun.

That's just it, it's so very easy to convert the SKS from an internal magazine to a detachable 20 or 30 round box magazine. So of the Chinese ones were even designed to be fed from AK magazines also.

Those detachable mags quite often really cut down on reliablity. The fixed 20 rounders are nice though.

Is that an absolute, or are all detachable conversions ify?

I think I'd rather save a little more if need be and get something that works out of the box, rather than trying to cobble mil-surp, even if it IS cool mil-surp.

First of all go with your heart/gut. Take the time to research and plan.
I have an SKS and it works for me.
