Gun cleaning mat?

I'm thinking a small plastic table cloth might just be the ticket.

My wife bought me one of those green mats with a rubbery bottom, I think it saves my guns from getting scratched up during cleaning. If you're taking care of hundreds/thousands of dollars worth of guns I think you can afford the $10-15 :)

+1 Hoppes has one for $11. It's nice and long for cleaning the rifles and shotguns too.

I use a plastic backed 4x5 drop cloth. the sell em at home depot or lowes in the paint department. it stays folded up in my cleaning bag - open it up, clean, fold and throw it back in when done.

Got a cleaning mat a few years ago, still using it.

I have always used a towel. Still works for me.

I use an old towel for the mat. Folded over itself. I never clean the towel, so now its a mess, but great for gun cleaning. I use old socks too. They get oily after a few weeks of use, so they're great for wipe downs. Just dont stuff them into your cleaning kit (ya know, spontaneous combustion and all...)

I use old Towel. Simple enough and I have a magnetic tray where I place the parts and pins etc.

I tend to use what looks like a carpet sample. I've also got a larger mat, but tend to use the carpet piece.

I use one of several old canvas bank dime, quarter, or half dollar coin bags kept on hand for the purpose or else some denim pieces left over from cutting off old blue jeans in order to make shorts, opening the denim pieces removed so they will lie flat. These may be laundered or tossed if they get too grimy to afflict the innards of the washing machine with.

Mind you this isn't four layers of denim. Denim layered in that fashion goes bad and allies itself with jello, requiring dispatch with a handgun bullet that penetrates at least 11 inches (or was that 11 feet?).
