I have a rifle size mat, I think it was a bonus with a NRA membership deal. Still going strong.

Old towels and other rags. Wash them when needed and reuse them.

I replaced my old towels with a small, black blanket from Wally-World for 1 dollar!!! I picked black to hide the stains.

I have a couple of the Glock mats......don't use them for cleaning or gunsmithing (they are keepsakes and keyboard/mouse pads). Newspaper is good IMO. Old worn out t-shirts, etc.

I use the small one for my hand guns. Have had it a few years now, actually didn't know it was washable.*

I also have one of these for the long guns.

*edit: I think these are the washable pads, not the above link which I have.

I have a mat and I buy shop towels from the auto supply store, the clean soft white ones are great for cleaning and helping you see whether something is clean or not -- if it's still coming off on the towel it's not clean.

I did set up some lights on my workbench in the garage for this task though; just like the solitude for one thing, but can't bring myself to clean guns and risk cleaning fluids on my wife's nice kitchen table. This way I could rig lights too, so I can see better, just cheap shop lights with a clamp that I can throw up when I'm doing detail work like this.
I'm in favor of gun control -- I think every citizen should have control of a gun.
