    How often to clean?

I am still new to handguns but, I need to ask someone.

How often do you field strip and clean your semi handgun?
I have read everything from 5k to 1k rounds? Is it just
possible to clean the bore and inside a bit without taking
    the slide and everything apart?

Maybe I should just get a revolver..lol but, I want the
higher capacity mags I can get in the semi.

Most people will say if its a defensive carry gun you should clean it every time. I try to do that, but don.t always get it done.

Yes, you can run a bore snake through it for a quick clean.
I carry a gun for the same reason I own a smoke detector...I never, ever, plan on needing them...but if I do need them, and have them in a box...I won't be able to get to them for use fast enough.

For me this all depends on how much I am going to use the gun. If I take out one of my safe queens to shoot for a day I usually do a fairly detailed clean afterwards since I know it will sit for a fair amount of time before being used again. Now, the guns that I shoot in competition I do a quick clean of the barrel and insides about every 800-1,000 rounds. Then do a detail strip and clean every 3,000 rounds. This seems to work well for me and I get zero malfunctions due to dirty parts.

As far as my CCW, it is a j-frame revolver which I clean up about once every 3-4 months weither it needs it or not. I hope this helps!

    Cleaning

Just cleaning a semi-auto through the ejection port is not enough for me, especially for a CCW. Field strip the gun and the magazines after every range trip. After every 3 or 4 trips, detail strip and clean. When pocket lint, sand, dirt or other grunge gets built up from day to day carry, strip and clean. Bottom line, it's a tool to save your life. Take 15 minutes out of your day, spend the $20 bucks or so for the right stuff and clean the thing. If you can't, or don't yet know how, spend a few minutes on Youtube or a couple of bucks at the gunsmith's and get it done.

If it's a carry weapon, clean it after you shoot it. That way you never forget for too long and run the risk of a jam/misfire due to too much grunge. Hopefully you're shooting often enough that you're not building up too much yuck between trips to the range...if you're going more than a month between shoots then I would suggest you shoot more. :)

Everytime a round goes down the bore. Which is why I'm torn about shooting it. It's fun and I need the practice, but I HATE cleaning my gun

This depends on the firearm as well. Some gun may not pull back smooth or the magazine well may get clogged and your magazine might not insert properly.

But on a quality firearm, this will not be an issue. However, that said, you should clean your lifeline more often than every 1000 rounds.

I clean my guns everytime I shoot, but if I don't shoot for a while, I will limit this to once a week as I like to check for loose parts (if any) as well as clean out the lint I have gathered while carrying.

I find cleaning guns very relaxing and will wipe down the gun, field strip clean or full strip clean (only once a year) as often as I can. There is nothing like putting in a movie and lining up 20+ handguns and going to work on my babies.

However, I do not enjoy cleaning my rifles.....

I believe in field stripping and cleaning my semi autos after any trip to the range. I rather enjoy the task so it's no inconvenience to me.

That's why you need two identical guns

Once per week whether it needs it or not. Carrying all week develops lint in the barrel and can get into the action if allowed to. Every week I field strip, clean the bore, lubricate and function check. IMO, a clean firearm and a routine function check is necessary to insure that your firearm is working properly. Your life depends on it ... right?

    How often to clean?
Not as often as I used to. My Glocks actually tell me when it's time. My others...usually after the trip to the range. If I take many to the range, I'll usually get to all of them in a week's time.
