    "incoming friend request"

Lately when I log in, I'm told I have an "incoming friend request." I tried DC's search function, which tells me that the search term "incoming friend request" is too common, and Google, which didn't tell me anything useful. It seems to be a vBulletin add-on.

What exactly is a "friend request", and why?

It's basically just a way for someone to put you on a short list of people that they enjoy talking to; ya know, kind of like a regular friend, only on the interwebs. Your friends list usually just a way to identify those whom you share a similar point of view or maybe someone that you would like to be able to pay a little more attention to when they post something since their activity shows up under the 'activity' tab when you view your own profile.

I believe your open friends requests can be found under the notifications bar and probably in your friends list which is located on your profile page below your information on the left. You should be able to see who it is that's asking to add you. Accept it or decline it as you wish. Most folks don't really try to collect friends for bragging rights so chances are nobody is going to be offended if you decline (especially if you don't have any in your list at all). Either way, it's not really a big deal.

Somebody wants to be "friends" with you. I don't know if it means holding hands and going on long walks together or just going to a ball game...that's between you and whomever.

If you look in your profile there's a "friends" section, if you click on that you can approve (or deny) friend requests.

The benefits (insert friends with benefits joke here) of having friends is that you can see posts from your friends in a different activity feed etc.

Well that and if you want you can play the facebook I have more friends than you game.

I love this site but I have always found it's search function less than useful. You can use Google to search only one site; that is how I find topics here on a certain subject. The syntax is this:

    searchterms site:defensivecarry.com

So for example, if I wanted to find uses of the term Mossberg 500 anywhere on this site, I would type the following:

    Mossberg 500 Site:defensivecarry.com

"Incoming" is a heads-up. "Friend" is something that I GET TO DECIDE. "Request" means it's STILL UP TO ME. What's so confusing?
