Glad you're alright, when I was younger (think I was 12?) I took a .22 to the foot. It was an old lever action, I was going through some brush and was using the barrel to hold vegetation back while I got through a particularly rough thick spot. I had the rifle on half cock, but what I didn't know was it was busted, so engaging the trigger would still cause the hammer to fall. I stumble, stupid me has the finger on the trigger and well, now I've got a decent scar.

I learned a few things that day, always keep your finger off the trigger until you're ready to shoot (I was told that, but I thought I was good enough to ignore sound advice...) and never assume a firearm's safety device is functional. Also getting shot hurts like a *****.

Hope your surgery goes ok, and you'll take away a solid lesson. Glad you're otherwise alright.

Sorry about your thumb. Sandwiches are hard to eat, buttons kick your butt and zippers are just best ignored until it heals up. I had to have my right thumb re-attached about 18 months ago. Just now getting confident with thumb safety on handguns.

On the up side. I had go to the plastic surgon every week. I was the only patient not showing off my new boob job.

I'm in this camp on this one,
Hope the pain subsides and all goes well at the surgeon, with a short period of healing

    Smooth move.

Having been shot in my hand before (no, I didn't shoot myself) the worst part is recovering from the surgery.

Sorry to hear that.. Sounds like you are lucky you didn't get hurt worse or hurt someone else. Anything that attaches inside the trigger guard touching a trigger isn't usually a good idea.
There is something about firing 4,200 thirty millimeter rounds/min that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

Saw the surgeon today. Basically, the damage is done. There is nothing they can do to improve the structure of the thumb. The bone is broke but again, nothing can be done. Infection (bone) is our biggest worry. It'll heal with time. The nail bed is FUBAR. The nail is not going to grow back uniform or smooth. Just got to keep it clean and pray like hell it does not get infected. As far as the pain. It really did not hurt that bad. They numbed the nerves in the ER to remove the nail, clean and stitch. It was throbbing pretty good but I got a shot of morphine. It eased right off. Came home with a prescription of Lortab. I took one the first night. Otherwise, it's been 600-800 mg of ibuprofen. The embarrassment is worse than the pain. Plenty of redneck jokes around the office today. Thanks for all the well words.

I don't think my story would have been the same in the office....

Ok guys if you insist all I can really say is there was a gun battle. Everything is real hush hush, the FBI told me not to talk about it until they get the rest of the militia rounded up.....

    Hope you heal fast

You're lucky it wasn't a .45 killer self-defense uber-expanding defensive round. Might not be around to talk about it :) Just kidding, here's to a speedy recovery.
