    Garage built machine gun!!

I'm sure that this is a dumb question but with the end of the world coming I was wondering if one could LEGALLY convert a semi auto to select fire for personal use. I know that it can not be done for sale, but what about for personal use? From what I have read I don't think it can be done; but hey, maybe someone here will tell me it's easy, just fill out a Form (X) and send $42 to the BATFE

I hate talking about weapons.. Sometimes I wonder what the founding fathers would say to us for putting up with these infringements of our rights.

Yes you can... But you need to fill out Form (Y) and send in $200 instead of $42 to the BATFE along with the usual background check, fingerprints and allow for unannounced inspection by the BATFE at anytime they feel they want to see your secure storage.

I'm sure others will provide all the fine points and details, but that's the gist of things in a nutshell.

Short answer is NO. Since the early '80s, the manufacture of new machine guns for civilian ownership has been prohibited. There have been some high-profile prosecutions for possession of full-auto guns, even one which was a broken semi-auto that went full auto for a few rounds.

Don't confuse ownership of an existing full-auto weapon with the manufacture (conversions included) of one

Run, don't walk, away from that idea.

Thanks for clarifying that for me gasmitty! I stand corrected.

I was under the assumption an individual could make the conversion himself.

See what assuming things will get you! Let that be a lesson!

Sorry for the incorrect information! *hanging head in shame*

best way to get an MG is to save up a few thousand $$$($5k-$30k), find an old one, fill out a form 4, pay $200 tax, and wait to be approved to get it.

How about a Class 2 firearms license? Of course I have NO idea what it takes to actually get one, but I imagine it would be cost-prohibitive.

You'r also need to check your state laws. Iowa, for instance, does not allow suppressors, full auto weapons, or SBRs.

If you wait until the end of the world it really won't matter what the alphabet soup group thinks about your idea. I don't condone illegal activity of course but for all practical purposes, the end of the world would actually be a survival of the fittest anyway.

Until then though, keep 'er legal. (SMILING)

Seriously, I have never used a rifle on full auto, despite having carried one with a "happy lever" and having shot at people who are shooting at me.

I just don't see the utility in full auto in a normal rifle. Now, give me an M240 or M2, and I could use me some rock'n'roll.

Can't you legally throw a registered full auto sear, or a registered lightning link into an AR and have that be legal? Since the registered parts are legally the machine guns?
Now, we must all fear evil men. But there is another kind of evil which we must fear most, and that is the indifference of good men.

See post #3....but if we're talking the SHTF (i.e. gov't is no longer in control), I guess you could do whatever you like.

But since that is NOT the case, no.
