Question Engraving on a pistol slide

Here's my dilemma. I want to get my son's name, rank, unit, etc. engraved on a CZ-82 slide while he's overseas and present it to him for Christmas.

I called place No.1 who says a laser engraver is needed for steel but doesn't have one, only drill bit type.
Place No.2 says laser won't work on steel and need to find someone with a drill machine--the oppostie of No.1.
    Okay someone is wrong here.
Place No.3 says can't do hardened steel, won't turn out well. I would assume the slide is hardened.(?)

Anyone out there ever had anything like this done before. I'm not looking for a custom engraving job (on a $200 pistol?), just some personalizing for the kid, a Navy EOD Diver.

My husband had a slide on his Colt Lightweight commander laser engraved, no problem. Also had a knife blade lasered. Sounds like the Lone Wolf will be a good thing to check out for your needs. Good Luck!!

If you know a good machinists with a CNC mill it's not too difficult. I work for an oilfield tooling company and we machine part numbers and serial numbers in heat treated steel every day.

A note: I'm emailing LW to see if the badges, etc. I'd like to get engraved can be done. The prints I have aren't the best, so I'll see what they say.

Meanwhile, I'm still open to suggestions.

You need a Yag to engrave steel, what they have done is lasered through the finish on the black slides and they use a product called cermark on the nickel or metallic colored parts. They don't make to many YAG lasers for engraving since CO2 is some much more efficient. Any engraving shop should be able to do what you want with a quality laser engraver. LW does do fine work though =]

A couple of years ago SIG did a limited (200) run of the SIG 220 for EOD and $100 went to the EOD Memorial. I believe they were laser engraved.

    See if this works....
