    Mag release Question

Well on Saturday I pulled the trigger and purchased my second ever handgun (Springfield XDm .40 with a 3.8" barrel) I purchased the gun used for $499.99 which came out to about $539 after taxes.

I have noticed that with my XDm as well as my Walther PPS that when I use the mag release with a loaded magazine that the release is a lot harder to activate than if the mag were empty and the slide locked back. Is this normal with semi autos and their mag releases?

All my semi-autos have a stiffer mag release when loaded rather than unloaded.

Not uncommon to take slightly more pressure since a loaded mag would have some additional pressure caused by the bullet pressed against the underside of the slide. Once the mag is empty there is no pressure and the mag is lighter. I don’t have an XDm but on my PPK and other semi-autos I myself do not notice a difference in the force needed to drop the mag.

That makes sense. The extra pressure on the bullet on the underside of the slide will cause the mag to be pushed down on the catch which holds the mag in place.

It was just weird because my roomate also has the XDm in .40 but when i tried his mags in my pistol it still took a considerable amount of pressure just to get a full mag to release. Where as in his pistol it was not as difficult.

That is normal and to help release the full magazine this is what I do it.

Put pressure on the mag release button
Hit bottom of mag with your palm.
    Magazine should drop right out.

haha before selling it, I had to file out the mag release in my M&P 40c to take a layer or two off of the poly before the release would work properly without sticking.
