I camp a lot with the family I always pack My Marlin Guide Gun since we live in Bear and Moose country. A .45-70 govt is a heavy hitter for sure and it kicks like a mule!
Ruger Super Redhawk 44 Mag for pistola and Ruger #1, 375 H&H Mag for rifle. The 375 is for stopping the zombies' vehicle 100 yards from my house and the rest of my collection is for picking them off as they scatter.
If the situation REALLY goes South on us, the heavy hitters will be out in this order, In my hand, the AR15 and a Glock 23 on my hip. In my wife's hand, her Moosberg 590 12ga HD shotgun and on her hip her XD .40 and in my oldest sons hand the AK with another XD .40 on his hip, in my daughters hand, her .22 rifle. Between the 4 of us, I think we can defend the safe room door until the cavalry arrives.
My "heavy hitters" for the SHTF scenerio are a Springfield M1A socom, paired with either a Sig P226 .40 S&w or my Springfield Load 1911 type pistol. The winchester 1300 defender 12ga and .357 magnum revovlers are back up or for use by family or friends.
Taurus Millenium Pro PT145 (.45 ACP) with Winchester Silvertip 185g JHP
Ruger P90DC loaded with same.
Remington 870 express loaded with #4
Worst comes to worst, .45-70 with 405g Remington
And, if I need to go long, Remington 770 (30-06) with 150g Federal.
heavy hitter handgun would be my S&W 1911
heavy hitter long gun would be my Mossy 500 with one ounce slugs
