Remington model 770
Who has one, and what is your opinion of it? I've been eyeballing a 30-06 at one of my local gun shops for $329. Is it one of those 'you get what you pay for' things, or is it something to look at and save up for? Thanks in advance.
P.S. I kind of like the detachable box magazine feature. Never had one...yet.

I used to have the 7 mm Remington mag , my personal opinion was a good rifle for the money , I never had a malfunction and at 100 yards was doing pretty nice grouping.

Wish I could help you decide. I no longer hunt and haven't looked at high-powered rifles in years. I still have my vintage '75 Model 700 in .30-06 and have always loved that gun. If the 770 is anything like it, it's nice. -06 is a great all-round cartridge. Taken everything from moose to ground squirrels with it. Yeah, overkill on the squirrels. 130 grain HPs. But at 200+ yards...?

The last Remington 700 I bought was a VLS model in 2003 or thereabouts. Laminated wood stock varmint 22-250 without scope. More than twice the price of this 770 model. I've been checking the internet for reviews, and some say they are cheap and not only in price. I fully understand the current economic situation and the marketing tactic, but I'm just wondering if there's any room for improvement or if there needs to be. I'm sure plenty would be satisfied with it right out of the box for the price. Maybe I'll begin to see some start showing up on the used market?
Ruger went cheaper on the 10/22 recently, and the originals are fetching a premium price on the internet and the newer ones are taking more work to make things right.
I figure this might go down the same road. I'm just asking.
