    Built Like A Tank, Huh?

I never scoop anyone on a forum but, since a look around didn't turn this up as being previously posted, I'll try with this clip of what is suppose to be a Ruger Redhawk barrel failure.

Rugers are pretty tough. Bet there is more to this story than meets the eye.

I remember in 1989 the turret blew up on one of the 16 inch guns on the USS Iowa. It happens. Bad charge, wrong procedure, defect in materials... It can happen to any gun. You're unleashing what we hope to be a controlled explosion inside a tube. Hopefully everything goes right, but every now and then....

Back in the 1980s a guy brought in a Ruger Super Blackhawk to a gunsmith friend that had the top and the two adjacent chambers blown out. Found out later that the shooter was new to reloading and since Bullseye and 2400 looked the same they were interchangeable, 22gr of Bullseye behind a 240 JHP did not work out very well. Amazingly the frame was not damaged and a new cylinder fixed the problem.

I agree; it does not matter what gun it is, it can always happen. Moreover, we do not know if they were reloads or what type of ammo the guy was using.

Some people like to shoot really warm loads in their ruger redhawk and blackhawks, they may handle them alright for years, but every now and then, and if he was shooting reloads he voided his warranty

Good analogy. I was the powder-monkey when we warped the barrel on a 5" cannon. We just ran it too hot. Procedure requiring a bore-check was the only thing that saved us.

The way the barrel flew off the gun, it looked like it might have been out of timing. Either way, it's a mechanical devise, anything can and will at some point in time.

That would definitely be scary. The guy looked like a beginner too, just from the way he was being instructed. What a way to start!

Two things I see here. First, just ruined the shooting experience for a new shooter. Two, the guy just had to leave early to change his drawers....
