    New Bushmaster xm15

Just purchased my first AR, after much research, and I just couldn't pass up the deal I got on this one.
Took it to the range yesterday just to function check and put 100 rounds through it of Federal .223 FMJ 55gr.
Some issues surfaced, which may be ammo or magazine related:
    1. 2 double feeds. Cartridge jammed into empty casing in feed ramps.
    2. 2 FTF. The 3rd round in the magazine wouldn't feed. When I drop the mag the top of the round is gouged in, like it was too low to be pushed in properly. (I triple checked if the magazine was seated fully and properly).
I have the MA compliant 10 round mags.
I am going to purchase some other magazines and ammo to see if I can diagnose the problem.
Otherwise, this thing is seriously fun to shoot!
I am optimistic as this is a project gun, and won't be used for primary HD until I get some training and these issues resolved, as I am a noob to the AR platform.
Any recommendations for slings and a red dot sight would be appreciated, as well as training programs in the MA area.
    Here are a few pics:
Sorry for the Blackberry quality pics.

Definitely try some different magazines, and make sure you keep your bolt lubed.

Get a chamber brush and make sure the chamber is respectably clean (doesn't need to pass the white-glove test).

Are you legally allowed to own/use 20- and 30-round mags? I'd say get some P-mags if you can... pretty dang reliable and affordable.

As a "victim" of 3 EAG Tactical courses I have a lot of faith in Pat Rogers' wisdom about AR gear. PM me and I'll send you some of his guidance.

Like was said, check clean chamber. If that doesn't solve it, change extractor, which is cheap. Now for the FTFs, simply change mag springs and followers.

I am limited to purchasing "Preban" mags, so Magpuls are out.
Anyone know about Thermolds? I found some prebans and also some USGI prebans to purchase.

Also, I won't be able to get back to the range for about a week so I'm going to do all the suggested checks and pick up some other mags beforehand.

Skip the Thermolds - they're near the bottom of the heap for reliability.

Since you're stuck with using pre-bans, look for gently-used GI mags. Your big problem there will be finding ones that don't have feed lips that have spreat apart, and the difference between good and bad is not easily detected by eye.
