    Got A Call From Kahr

I sent my Kahr CW9 off 10 days ago for repair. The trigger pivot pin was working it's way out the right side of the frame during firing. This would happen rather quickly in just so much as 2 magazines (7 round mags). So I called them, they gave me an RMA number and said it would be covered by warranty as long as I was the original owner and it was less than 5 years old. (both true) So off it went.

I just got a call from Ian at Kahr repair. He said the gunsmith just placed my gun on his desk. Said he had bad news and good news.

Bad news: Gun was damaged beyond repair. (hmmm?) He didn't say exactly but I think it was frame related.

Good news: The gunsmith custom built me a replacement gun using a new frame and (some) new parts. I would guess that the new parts are to replace any parts from the old gun that could not be salvaged. They used some old parts from the old gun and some new parts he said.

He said he had to have an FFL to ship it to, so I gave him my local FFL address and number.

Sounds like you made out all right then.

I had a brain fart last winter and managed to jam up my CW9 on reassembly. I called Kahr CS and left a message; I had a call back from Ian the next business day with advice, which I thought was pretty reasonable.

Yeah Ian is pretty good. I for the life of me can't imagine how it could have been damaged beyond repair. It hasn't been run over with a vehicle. It hasn't had any reloads fired in it. It has fired pretty much nothing but 115gr WWB and a few Speer Gold Dot's.

So now you have to pay FFL fees on your end.

So, you have no idea what caused the problem, and no idea how to avoid it in the future? While it's not always possible to know for certain, it seems to me that those two answers would be fairly important.

Could be worse, but look at it this way, you have a custom built pistol for only $25 over stock price!

I don't it would have been something that I could avoid. The gun probably hadn't had 500 rounds through it. I'll try and check with them and see if they have it on record, they can tell me what the actual failure was. I am kinda curious myself since I take real good care of all of our firearms. They don't get dropped, ran over, etc. We mainly shoot FMJ 115gr cheap ammo, no reloads, or Speer Gold Dot 124gr and they get cleaned after each outing. Oh well. We'll see. If I find out, I'll let you know.

That is probably because it will have a different serial number. You can't reuse a number.

It seems quite silly that you have to go through the background paperwork to get your own gun back...what would they do if you just happened to have something hanging out there preventing you from buying a gun at this point in time but not from owning one. You already own it.

I'm not familiar with Kahr weapons. Is this a polymer or metal frame? How many round through it?

Since it is "custom" with a new frame, will it have a new serial number?

Polymer frame. Through the old one, I probably had around 400 to 500 rounds. Yes it will have a new serial number. But you know, Uncle Sam wants to know who has what, so I have to do paperwork so they know I have it (for when they want to come get it).

I would ask them to run 200 rds. through it before they sent it to me.

    tkruf,
It sounds like mostly good news. The new serial number is definitely the reason you need to have it transfered to an FFL. $25.00 is not unreasonable. Running 200 test rounds at the factory would be unreasonable. I too would be curious to know why the pistol needed a complete rebuild.
Kahr is a good name and a quality firearm made in the US. I think they are a bit over priced for the market but that is just my opinion.

That's a real good idea. I should have thought of that. But I'll have fun doing it myself. I have EDC carry guns that I carry more than the CW9.
