It operates as a machine gun, but for some reason there is an exception for the MAC manufactured before June 21st 1982 and as far as the ATF is concerned it is not a machine gun.

Is there a way to find out if one was produced before 1982?

    Do you have one?
You should be able to find out by contacting the manufacturer with the serial number and find out.

I believe that the original mfgs are pretty much defunct. I have never seen any serial number charts for MAC pieces.

If they are still sold, contact the importer, they might know how to find. Although the ATF doesn't track guns when they are sold, they should know if the gun was made before or after the cut-off date. You might want to make the call from a phone booth, in a different state...
I believe the reason they are legal are because the serial numbers were assigned before the ban even if the guns weren't manufactured until after the ban.
