As I read the first few sentences in the indictment my initial reaction was big deal, who cares, why 70 agents? Then I got to the good stuff. My my my!!! Felon in possession, serial numbers removed, silencers found. And neither indicted person is a young (i.e. stupid) person. Bye bye to them for good I hope.

I mentioned in another post that most press releases I get from ATF are related to drugs or gangs. For this type of news, I too just shrug and also say big deal.
ATF gets involved in these investigations when the case also involves firearms and especially a Felon in possession of firearms.

This case I though, was of some interest to this forum because it deals with several illegal activities. Selling guns without a license, Felon in possession of a firearm(s), Non registered NFA firearms, etc. Not one of these violations is a minor infraction. Some are a mandatory 10 years in the slam. This also took place in California where the penalty for possession of banned automatic weapons may be even more extreme than that of the Federal penalties(s).

70 agents does seem to be extreme however the average ATF investigation normally averages 2 years before an indictment. ATF is also under a good amount of pressure to step up their efforts to curtail gun trafficking in boarder states so a show of force makes for good pr.
