Help me choose some new grips for a 1911

I think I am finally ready to venture into the world of custom grips for one of my full size 1911's. I am going to buy myself a set as a present sometime in the next month or so.

Some of the requirements: They need to be durable. I would like a black or near black color, but am open to options as far as material. They will be going on a full size stainless SA Loaded, and I like the black on stainless look.

I want to have something engraved or somehow else visible on each grip.

And I want to maintain functionality of the firearm, which currently has the SA factory ambi-safety on it.

And preferably under $100, but I can go higher, I just don't want to.

Some of the places I have been looking so far are Aluma Grips, and Sarge's Grips. Where else should I be looking?

Try Esmeralda, some of the best looking grips around and in your price range.

Esmeralda has some nice grips. I've seen her website.

However, don't forget our own fellow DC member, Sarge43.

He makes the most beautiful custom grips with some of the most wildest exotic woods you'll ever see. A true master at what he does, if ever there was one!

For a gallery of his incredible work, check out his link here.

(It's a Sticky post at the top of the "Related Gear & Equipment" forum.)

Here's a link to his website. The Finer Grain and Sarge's Grips

Note: I just checked out his website again which I hadn't done in a while. He's now making grips with genuine animal skin. Snake skins, lizard skins and Sting Ray! You should see the set of Sting Ray skins with the natural white diamonds! Also an incredibly tough hide. Just incredible! And the Rattle Snake looks especially cool too.

But his exotic woods can't be beat either!

I'm a huge fan of VZ grips. I put a set on my Ed Brown executive carry 45 and they are excellent. I chose the black alien grips.
It's not a problem til they make it one!

I got a set for two of my guns and am very satisfied.

Yeah, My old CCW 9 MM is nicknamed "Barkey"
    New CCW LCP is "Elsie"
and my 12 Ga S x S Coach gun is "Boomer"
Wife's weapon is "Miss Pearl" (SP101 .357 w/mother of pearl inserts)
We're old so we can get away with that.

Another one for VZ grips. Never found anything more durable than G10.

Available in varying degrees of grip. 320s are the mildest, but I like the Tactical Diamonds.

If it has a smooth frontstrap, I definately prefer some sort of texture on the grips like DDs. I prefer the feel of smooth grips with a checkered or other testured FS. I was all set to get a hold of Sarge when my daughter suprised me with a set of some kind of maple. I'm still calling him someday but it has to wear these a while. I like them though. Btw, Sarge does stipling. Crappy pic warning!

Part of the criteria was able to be engraved. AlumaGrips does a wonderful job with just about any art you can supply.

I've got a set of stippled double diamond in rosewood from Altamont on my RIA. Love em.

And their prices can't be beat!

I'll post a pic when I get home..

The only real grips are made from wood. Everything else is fake.

I myself would like a dark set of Cocobolo grips on a stainless gun.

This set from Esmeralda would look great on a stainless pistol:

I like this one. You could get the Eagle, Globe and Anchor on there.

The Eagle Globe and Anchor are going to be part of it, I want that, with my Iraq Dates on one grip, and Afghan Dates on the other grip.
