My Father-In-Law gave me 2 guns tonight, a S&W model 10 and a Thompson Auto-Ordinance 1911. My question is on the 1911, is there any where that I can look up serial numbers to determine the age of the gun?

My Father-In-Law gave me 2 guns tonight, a S&W model 10 and a Thompson Auto-Ordinance 1911. My question is on the 1911, is there any where that I can look up serial numbers to determine the age of the gun?
It is doubtful it is very old...I dont think they have been in the 1911 business a lot of years?
