It's practically the only round in USPSA Open Division. It's hard hitting and high capacity; it should make a great defensive round. Now, they have 4-5 variations--38 Super Comp, yes, 9x23, actually 9x21 is close, and others. Make sure you get the true 38 Super when you buy brass, as the others have just as big a share in USPSA.

Hmmmm, I think when the time comes to buy what I thought would be a that 45 slide, i'm going to ask Colt about this, and get a total price. If it's not outrageous and they indicate it would work, I'll do it. Hard to believe though the feed ramp for a 45 would also work for a smaller round. But who knows. Worth finding out.
How does it compare to the .357 Sig? Seems to be very comparable, and I would imagine the .357 Sig ammo is easier to find?![]()

My LGS has both 357 sig and 38 super on the self. I'd never really considered this caliber but after reading this thread I have to admit I'd like to fire one in 1911 guise and try it out.

i have a 38 super colt goverment model and i love it i took it deer hunting with me while in the woods and using the corbon dpx it blew a big hole in the deer head at 10 feet (i came up to the deer it was still alive but servely wounded found out later that the spin and back legs were broken). it's a great round and very mild recoil plus its a true 1911 round.
You aren't the only one. I had many chances this year to buy one at a gimme price but passed because I didn't want the bother of trying to stock the ammo. Now that I know this, I'm over extended, of course. I've wanted to own a 9mm 1911 for a while. Ever since I rented a Para double stack and shot the snot out of it. It's more fun that shooting 22LR from a Mark III.

I have a Colt Lightweight Commander in 38 super and have had it since 1973. One great caliber.
I will have a 1911 one day. Part of me says go traditional get .45acp, the the other part is very interested in the .38 super. I'd like to shoot one. How do ballistics of the super compare to the 9x23?

Picked up a Colt 1911 in 38Super at a recent gun show (gotta celebrate the Centennial) and finally took it to the range last weekend. Great fun to shoot and very accurate. I was a bit surprised at the recoil; the 130gr 38Super +P has about the same recoil as a 230gr 45ACP and has a tendency to torque like a 44Mag.
Here is a thread I started on it. http://www.defensivecarry.com/vbulle...d.php?t=119006

I'm rejoining the workforce in a couple of weeks and--hopefully--will have some extra dollars to start looking for a .38 Super. While my Mil retirement has kept my head above water (but not by much), it left no "play" money.

Back in the early '90's a friend of mine had a Springfield Armory 1911 in .38 Super. That thing was a HOOT to blast water jugs and old melons with. I have had one on my wish list ever since.
