    Hand Gun Hunting

I love to hunt with a handgun. Mostly wild hogs for me. I use either my Glock 29 or my Raging Bull in .454 Casull. Iron sights and close range does it for me. What about y'all? What do you shoot and what is your favorite game animal to hunt with your big iron?

Popped a few squirrels with a Ruger .22 auto while deer hunting... also nailed a woodchuck at 40 yards as he helped himself to my salad garden. Not sure if those count as 'hunting' so much as pest elimination.

When I get bored squirrel hunting with a rifle, I'll switch things up and use a Ruger 22/45 or Mark 2. Or, better yet, I've shot more deer than any hunter I know with my P220. Cars knock em down, and I finish them off with my trusty sidekick.

Rockchucks and ground squirrels with a TC 14" Contender in .223. Also had the .30 Herritt barrel for deer but never got the chance to use it. Awesome round though.

Deer with a Savage Striker in .243 Winchester, topped with a 4-9X Scope.
This is like my gun, but with a smaller scope than I have:

Farthest shot, 217 yds. Most are at 100+ or so.

I've taken some deer with handguns and have several suitable for the task. It's great fun too. I've used the .44 Magnum and .38 Special. I want to take a few deer with a .41 Magnum I got a while back. Carried it some this past season but the only time I saw deer while packing it was from 2000 yards away.

What is really fun is small game hunting. I used to do it all the time but haven't much lately. I use a Smith & Wesson .22 revolver most of the time but have used both a revolver chambered for the .32-20 and one in .38 Special too.

Hunt everything from squirrels and white tail deer, to African game, to rogue farm animals. All iron sighted revolvers, .22 rimfire, 10mm, 41 mag, 44 mag. 180-200 grain 10mm, usually XTPs, for the 41 mag I use 215 grain hardcast bullets, and when I pick up the 44, its stoked with 300 grain hard casts. When I want to use the old 45 long colt (which everyone but me knows is out of style) I stoke it up with 315 -325 grain hard casts.
photo.jpg And an occasional varmit with the 357 mag. (Good for 2 legged varmits as well)

I'm not OldVet but here is some history on the 30 Herrett. Great round and fun to make and shoot, gives about the same ballistics as the 30-30 but with less powder and better suited for a 10-14 inch barrel. I have both the 30 and 357 Herrett barrels for my Contender and have always wanted an elk with the 357 Herrett just have never had the money or time.
