Home Invasion, Or So I Thought....
Sitting in my living room watching Criminal Minds with the wife, two dogs and the cat when all of a sudden it sounds like the door from the house to the garage is being opened. “What the Hell” I yell as I am swinging out of my seat, the dogs are now barking, pulling my firearm and aiming down the stairs and hallway to the front door. The door to the garage is to the right just out of sight. I have taken a knee and am aiming around the corner of the couch. About then my wife realizes and says, “It’s the screen door”. The wind had come up and had caught the screen door. Man what a relief. It sounded just like someone was opening a door and entering my home. The old ticker was really pumping I can tell you that.

Brings a whole new light to "ventilating the bad guy like a screen door"!
Glad you didn't add more holes where they weren't needed and kudos on the situational awareness.

The wind was fun last night... My wife and I heard some odd noises in the backyard, like someone was prying open the basement door or something... flicked on the lights, sent out the dog (who was looking at me like "what's the problem?") and went out on the deck. I didn't hear anything further and dog decided to grab a bite of snow and was wholly unconcerned about the noise. Went down the stairs to the patio under the deck and saw a snow sled was being pushed along the cement patio by the wind. Made a h3lluva noise for plastic on concrete.
Dog never even bothered to come downstairs and when I came back to the deck he was looking at me like I was an idiot. "Dude... I woulda barked if it was a bad guy..."
This from the 100+lb GSD that loses his mind when the doorbell rings...

Sounds like an excellent unscheduled training exercise, which you passed.

At least you had your pistol instantly ready...

Years ago, I was asleep with my wife when I heard the sound of window glass breaking---it was early morning but the sun was up---same thing, dogs barking---I was instantly up and Walther P5 in hand and taking defensive position---turned out my next door neighbor was having some windows replaced and his workers were taking out the old windows with a hammer (!) Makes you think!

I carry always, even at home. Now I know why I guess. Looking back I have to say things went just as I would have liked them to go. I pretty much swung off of the couch drawing my gun and took a knee in a defensive position aiming in the direction of the potential threat. My next step would have been to yell at my wife to get behind the couch and call 911 but luckily it didn’t have to come to that. I guess I couldn’t ask for much more.
