Raleigh second-grader dies after accidental shooting
Raleigh, N.C. A second-grader at Lynn Road Elementary School died Tuesday after he was accidentally shot in the head at home the previous day, his family said Wednesday.

Ty-Rion Henry, 8, was shot when his grandfather's pellet gun went off Monday afternoon, said his mother, Brianne Henry.

The grandfather was shooting at squirrels outside and placed the gun at the foot of the stairs when he came back inside, Henry said. As Ty-Rion was coming downstairs, Henry said, her father checked to make sure the gun's safety latch was on, and he accidentally hit the trigger, shooting the boy.

Even an air gun should be treated with the same respect as a cartridge weapon; some air rifles are more powerful than a 22LR.

My God, I can't imagin how he must feel. I hope they don't press any charges against him, as he will be paying for the rest of his life with the gilt.
My condolances to the entire family.
The only good to come frome this is the faimly will be donating his organs. A very unselfish thing to do at a time like this.

On the news tonight they showed a picture of the rifle. The safety is located inside of the trigger guard forward of the trigger, a poor design and an accident waiting to happen.

    So sad!

I had my 14 year old read this story, I just bought him a S&W M&P air pistol for his BDay. I had the talk with him and refresher on firearms safety but this solidifies it.

I'm not going to disagree that it is an "interesting" place to have a safety located, I was surprised when I got my air rifle last year, but you are supposed to put the safety on before loading the pellet. And of course only flip it off when you are ready to shoot. It can be safely put back on before removing your finger from the trigger guard if you don't shoot. The safety features are only as good as the user of the weapon.
    Tragic story.

Additional to PAcanis; As well following _standard_ firearm safety rules when finished using a firearm what do you do?...Clear and stow as EMPTY, with the action open if at all possible. Also the bore of the gun is to be pointed in a SAFE DIRECTION when being handles at any time. Further he moments prior had left a live and charged firearm openly available as within the home unsecured for anyone including the child himself to come across.

This dude failed on multiple levels, regardless of the guns design.

Whatever happened to "Point firearm in safe direction",for this to have happened the barrel would have been pointed at the kid.Totally negligent and not accidental.I also checked and Grandpa was Illegally shooting squirrels out of season,Season ended Feb 13th.

Of course the rules of gun safety would have prevented this tragedy. Seriously though, what idiot engineer puts a gun safety inside the trigger guard directly in front of the trigger? I mean did they have a contest at the factory to come up with the dumbest possible place to put the thing?

Actually the safety is in front of the trigger guard, you do not have to get near the trigger in order to engage the safety.

Correct, in order to engage, to disengage you do.

Yes, lots of basic gun-handling mistakes here - and it cost the ultimate price.
