Ideas for a new range gun.

    Hi-

I am in the market for a wheel gun just to take to the range, no cc or defense weapon. I think I narrowed my choices down to S&W 686 or a Taurus 608, either or and in a .357 cal. I thought about the S&W 500, but for 1200 a the local gun store, I do not think so. Does anyone have any suggestions?

IMO, a 686 is one of the best handguns ever made. Great range gun......

If I was looking for a gun that I was sure was not going to be used for any type of defensive situation and was going to strictly be a range gun I would be looking at a .22lr. Shoot all day (heck, all WEEK) for 20 bucks.

I'm with Rollo. Plenty of .22lr wheel guns available for under $200 that you can shoot cheap ammo through forever with no problems. Clean it and keep on trucking on the cheap.

Here's another vote for a quality .22 if you haven't already picked one up. You'll wonder how you ever got along without one once you shoot it.

I am all for the 22lr range gun (Ruger is my FAV!) but I have a long range range gun I have had it for a long time (1989) It is only a range gun, and pig hunting gun Ruger Red hawk 44 mag with 7-1/2 inch barrel. It is the most fun thing to shoot I own.

You can pick up an old H&R Double Action Revolver in 22 for just over $100.

I'd also vote for a .22 they are so cheap to shoot that it gives you an excuse to shoot more and more.

I'd pick a phase plasma rifle with 40 watt ranging.

I would go .22 for a first range gun! can't overstate the benifits of practice and whatelse can you afford to shoot now a days! I think as far as 357's go a 686 would be a fine choice.

I'll bet I have posted this six or seven times in threads the past few years. You are the first person to get it.

    Glad to be of service

To the OP though I would go with the Smith. My wife has a 6" 686 that is just plain fun to shoot. And for economy you can always shoot .38s. Not as cheap as .22 but not as expensive as .357 either.
