I'll confess one of my own - about 6 months ago I took some of my reloads to the local public range. I fired about a dozen when I hear a "pop" instead of a "BANG." I open the cylinder (.357 mag S&W 686) and notice that there is a clump of powder in the forcing cone. Using a pocket knife I managed to clear the powder and see the base of a bullet. What had happened was that the case lube I was using had gotten inside the case and contaminated the powder to the point it would not work.

I went home via the local Home Depot (needed a wood dowel and a rubber mallet to get the bullet out of the barrel). I pulled apart the rest of the reloads and disposed of the powder.

A middle aged woman was shooting in the stall next to me at a busy range and got the skin between her index and thumb stuck in the slide. My husband and I had previously helped her after the RSO asked us to guide her a little. When she got her hand stuck she turned around to ask my husband for help, accidentally swung the gun in his direction, and when my husband slapped it down she pulled it back up! It took a few seconds for him to realize that her hand was stuck, but he eventually freed her. The scary thing is that she was planning on buying a weapon that night and said she would need to find someone to clean it for her.

Not at the range but another place dear to most of our hearts. While traveling through east Tennessee I stopped at the Smoky Mtn Knife Works. I was looking around like a kid in a candy store. I asked to see a very nice "out the front" automatic knife. While struggling to figure out the safety/opening mechanism. I promptly managed to release it with my hand in front of the business end. I calmly pulled the blade from my off hand and handed the knife back to the clerk. I told him I didn't think I needed one like that, jammed my dripping hand in my pocket and made a b-line for the exit. It was ME I was THAT GUY. What a jackazz. So I did what any male would do. I stopped back by a few days later on my way back through to actually nmake some puchases. I was very thankful I didn't see that clerk working that day . I was more than emberassed.

I've seen my share of stupid things done while at a range. One in particular occurred at an outdoor range. The range was hot with about a half dozen active shooters - I was reloading some magazines when I noticed a guy walk up to a lane and begin unloading his range bag. I went about my business and out of the corner of my eye, I see him begin to walk downrange with a target while the range was hot - yes, shooters were shooting. I immediately heard the range officer begin shouting 'cease fire' and 'get off the range'. Everyone stopped shooting and needless to say the safety officer chewed his butt out royally. If I recall right, the guy was escorted back to the range office. The range was shutdown temporarily at that point, so didn't stick around long enough to see if he was allowed to shoot after getting a safety briefing.

Another very sad and tragic thing was seeing the aftermath of someone committing suicide at an indoor range. We have a nice indoor range that rents handguns. Over the past couple of years, they have had I think it was something like four of these happen. The shooter decides that they want to end it all, goes to a range and rents a handgun, and well it's over. The really sad part of my involvement - fortunately I was shooting in another set of lanes far removed from where this happened - was seeing that several families were at the range at the time that this occurred. It traumatized everyone, but really effected the kids that were at the range that day.

+1, this is the key to get new shooters involved, saftey is the biggest issue I have seen, or lack of for newbee's.

We used to make my little brother run and course on our mountain property. The only rule was no more then three pumps and you could only aim for the legs. The three pump rule tended to go out the window if we didn't score any hits! haha....
