Calif. Citizens' Academy puts civilians in the OIS hot seat
A good counterpoint to all the negative police shootings we've seen recently.
After their encounters, “all the students report seeing a gun or seeing a gun actually fired at them, which prompted them to shoot,” Goard says. “Yet in the videos, they see themselves using deadly force on people with wallets, cell phones, drills, and unarmed.” One student described a role-player as threateningly pointing an automatic rifle; in reality the “suspect” pointed aggressively with his arm.

Actually I don't see why training like this isn't offered more often. My first exposure to something like this was way back in the '70's when our unit was run through a "Shoot, don't Shoot" course that the US Capital Police had. Even back then it was an eye-opener.
EOD - Initial success or total failure
I remember the old "SHOOT DON'T SHOOT" videos where your watching a scene unfold, suddenly something happens, shoot or don't shoot, one scene was where a guy runs out a door and his arm comes towards you and you see a metallic flash,(Its a Plainclothes Cop flashing his badge)
"Outside of the killings, Washington has one of the lowest crime rates in the country,"

Yeah, its never as easy as one would think. If you shoot and you shoot someone unarmed, you're hosed. If you shoot because someone holds something in a threatening manner like a cellphone you're hosed. If you dont shoot because you arent sure and you get "shot" because you took too long to decide, you're hosed.
Wait too long and you lose. Shoot too fast and you lose. Shoot too often you lose.
It just aint easy to do.
I would rather stand against the cannons of the wicked than against the prayers of the righteous.
