What do you do if you find a gun?
Say you are walking along a river, or lake or some body of water and a gun washes ashore. What do you do?
I am thinking it is best to contact the police as the gun could have been used in a crime. If the police find no sinister background, do you get to keep it?
What if it were a rifle instead?

Call the police, wait until they get there, then shout "DIBS" as loud as possible so there can't be any mistaking who has a claim on it. Then let them take it for whatever.

If it's a Baer or Brown 1911 and not rusted to hell, I never saw it and it didn't exist. If it's a Taurus or a Glock, I'd call the cops. <ducking>

If a gun washes ashore it's made of plastic. Steel sinks.

Call LE and wait until they arrive. If it is linked to a crime or stolen I would not want to contaminate any evidence that may be on it. I would ask for a receipt to claim it if it does come back clean.

Call and wait for the police. Not sure I would want to claim a gun that washed ashore even if I could.

I'd toss it back in, post about it, and watch all you loons go swimming trying to retrieve a rusted out piece of crap.

I think Eddie the Eagle makes it perfectly clear what you should do if you find a gun...

Only after you cut through the finish with a diamond first. Sure it'll need new springs and maybe $20 worth of internals replaced, but odds are it'll fire.
Turn it in, let them run it, ask to be able to claim it if the period expires for the owner to seek it out, then probably clean it up real good and sell it to get something that didn't live at the bottom of the lake. Maybe shoot it for a youtube torture test first, gotta be internet famous for something right?
