Baghdad, late 2005, Iraq won the Arab Cup in soccer. They fired off SO MANY FRIGGIN ROUNDS, that the Palace (Embassy) pool alone caught 50 or so bullets. Several people got dinged, one serious injury (hit in the head with a heavy caliber - 12.7 or 14.5mm)... I imagine downtown Libya was about the same during these episodes - maybe even worse.
A man fires a rifle for many years, and he goes to war. And afterward he turns the rifle in at the armory, and he believes he's finished with the rifle. But no matter what else he might do with his hands - love a woman, build a house, change his son's diaper - his hands remember the rifle.

Hey, what goes up, must come down! When I was a kid, one of my young neighbors shot an arrow up in the air, it came down nearby and hit a tree then went straight thru his earlobe(!)---enough of that nonsense.

I'm sure someone caught a few of them! I hate seeing stupid stuff like that.

Good possibility there will be a few less Libyans due to the celebratory gunfire.

I saw several threads on this issue, so I did a quick google search. Apparently, due to terminal velocity, the bullet will only reach about 220-300 FPS. It could potentially penetrate flesh, but is less than lethal, in most cases. One article that I read said people have died from it, but numbers in the study were supposedly vastly inflated.

Either way, it is a bad idea.

Did that once too. Realized how dumb it was when the arrow hit about three feet away.

A bullet fired "perfectly" straight up is fairly harmless as the tests show. It comes back down only as fast as if dropped. However, the greater the angle of deflection, the greater the retained velocity; and that's when it gets dangerous as "straight up" is difficult to achieve.

A Lot of injuries I suspect, at a minimum.

Ha! So true. Better save some ammo for the next uprising.
So far there doesn't seem to be a shortage of Libyans, so I think the injuries are minimal.
