mlr1m, I have nearly an identical twin to that Shiloh of yours in 40-70SS. Mines has an ebony forearm tip with no scopeblocks and also no schnabel on the pistol grip but otherwise it's the same gun. I have the big boys in 45 2 7/8 for the long range shooting. The 40-70 starts to lack a little past 800 yards. You need to stretch the legs on that 90. I have seen them perform very well out to 1 mile, of course you need a lttle taller tang sight to make it that far.

As I have fired the 16 inch guns on USS Wisconsin at max range over 20 times, max range being 26 miles plus, I had to answer over 1000 yards.
(But I have had the chance to shoot with some Marine snipers in training and we shot at things over 1000 yards. They all hit them,regularly, I hit only a few times.)

Mike, I said something about Arty not counting in the first post. There can't be too many folks left that have gotten to shoot the 16 inch guns on the battle wagons.

Love the notion of the guns on a battleship. Love to read of 20th century naval surface engagements.
My dad was aboard the Pennsylvania as it steamed from San Francisco to Hawaii in early 1945. Some practice gunnery was had on the way. He was sent below and said that the 14-inch guns would cause the light bulb filaments to break.

I also like the idea of giant guns on battleships, but specifically decided to leave this poll to .50 cal and below. Just in case there is a drone pilot on here, that launches missles from Nevada, at targets in pakistan.

Thanks for the recommendations. Think I'd enjoy a treatise on Destroyers too. Read "Iron Coffins" a long time ago and ought to read it again.
