I may return to Illinois permanently to live near family. Does anyone know what the process is for legally licensing out of state purchased firearms? Also do they have any high cap bans? I never owned any guns when I lived there before. The area I would be in would be Warren or Knox county.
Illinois is one of the top (if not the top) antigun, anti freedom states in the nation. To legally own a gun,buy a gun or even buy ammo you must first get a "Firearms Owners I.D. card, commonly called a FOID.
Yes,they have high capacity magazine bans, among other things.
You don't have to register your firearms with the State of IL. I do not believe that the State of IL has a high capacity ban. There are local ordinances that may be an issue, but those ordinances are linked on that website also.
Heart felt condolences. I have a brother in Illinois, when I go to Indiana I refuse to go see him. I make him drive to Indiana to see me. Granted I have already driven 800 miles to get there, I figure he can drive 100 miles for the visit.
My wife is from Springfield, IL. You must get a Firearms Owner Identification (FOID) card to show you are the owner. Illinois is one of the last hold out states that restrict firearms. They do not issue nor recognize concealed carry permits. You are at the mercy of every criminal, especially the political one's from Chicago who actually run the state.
My wife and I have to keep our firearms unloaded and inaccessable when we travel there to visit her parents and son, so surrender your rights when you become an IL resident again.
There is hope on the horizion however. There is talk of having legislation passed to allow concealed carry at last. Their neighbour to the north, Wisconsin, just did it, so Illinios is surrounded by states that do. Maybe they will surrender to the gun-rights people at last.
Welcome back. Illinois is a GREAT place to live. You will like it here. The only downside are the crooked politicians both Democrap and Republicon. But some of us are working on geting rid of them. There is no ban on high capacity mags in the State but some counties like Crook do restrict them. Where may I ask will you be moving to in our great State?
I'd actually be moving back to Monmouth area and probably buying property outside of the city limits. It would be great to be near family, have a lower cost of living and the job I'm in the running for would be more than twice what I'm making now. I do have high hopes for the gun laws changing and most of my family and friends there are gun owners.
I moved from Texas back to Illinois when my mom got sick right before W became Governor and passed the Texas concealed carry law. It was incredibly painful to move from a very gun friendly state to a state I could not even buy ammo without my FOID card. Get your FOID as quickly as possible and check out some of the great gun ranges.....outside of Chicago. I was a member of a great gun club in downstate Illinois, and unfortunately, the rest of the state lives by the rule of the libs from Chicago. Hopefully that will change....but they were saying that when I left in 2000 for the Gunshine State. There were no high cap bans when I left eleven years ago....but Mayor Daley had a lot of time to work his magic since I've been gone.
Good luck, my friend. Don't judge the rest of the state by what the idiots in Cook County do.
I definitely would not move to IL, nor any other anti state in the country. In fact I recommend all gun owners in those states move out and take all of their revenue with them. Let all the anti's live there with the criminals by themselves.
Family and money go a long way to beating this out. Las Vegas is dying off and I see the writing on the wall. It also weighs on me that it is where I grew up. All this makes it a near non-issue to me.
I live and work in Downstate IL. Like others have a said "Get your FOID." Find a LGS and get that started right after you move in. It can take from 6-8 weeks. The state government is very slow. If you stay away from Chicago the rest of the state is pretty good about guns in general.
