Not sure if many here know much about them since a lot of discussions involve handguns and defense, but figured I would throw it out there. Most that I have seen say Mak-90 Sporter...what does it mean if there however is no Sporter anywhere and no date on importation. Typically they would say 93xxxxx for 1993, this one instead looks like 12345 and the other mark is 512345. No indication of date or sporter and 2 importation companies, completely across the country from one another. Any info or why this one is so different from all others I have seen in person and online would be appreciated. I have searched through a ton of pages online and cannt find anything, must be too obscure I guess. Thanks
Some pictures would certainly help. There is a lot of info on MAK's online if you know where to look. Realize that the MAK's were "trapped" in the pipeline during the ban under Clinton, and the modifications were ad-hoc to by-pass the restrictions. Therefor the unusual marks and numbers are symptomatic. I'll add some links here after you post some pics.
Here is a page with a lot of info about the MAK90. Norinco MAK-90 Model of the Kalashnikov AK-47
Mine is a Norinco and seems to have had a 1 added to the front of the SN so I'm guessing it was a 91 import. Others I have seen have 91, 92... in front of the SN. The engraving was done very well and it is very hard to tell it was added later. The only other visible alterations were "sporter" added after the MAK90 on the left side and "KSI Pomona CA' engraved just above the grip. I picked mine up a few months ago at the local shop and they got it used, but it did not appear to have been shot much if at all. Mine is a stamped reciver and has all matching numbers. It shoots great and I am glad I picked it up!
The MAK Sporters were made with the thumbhole stocks to get around the Assault Weapons Ban that was enacted. Bayonet lugs were ground off also.
When the Ban became null and void because it was not renewed specifically by Congress, the thumbhole versions were no longer made.
The Sporter is simply an AK with a thumbhole stock. If it were me, I'd chunk that Clintonesque stock in the fire and put the correct stock on it.
I changed the furniture on my MAK, I hated that thumb hole stock. It has the Galil style hand-guard now too. No pics of that yet. The furniture is standard AK47 size and fit my MAK90 fine. After buying, I later read that standard AK fare may not fit them and was concerned about that due to my normal level of luck.
Mine starts with 94, guess that makes it a 94 model after the ban was passed? It also has "MAK-90 Sporter" stamped in the metal, not engraved and no cut off bayonet lug.
