    Help!! Need info on this colt 38

    Ok so here's what I got... A colt official police 38. Special. Heres my question I can't locate a serial number anywhere on this gun. Barrel on one side says "colt's msg co Hartford, ct u.s.a." And on the other side says " official police" under that it says " 38 special ctg" I've looked under the grips even. I got the gun from my grandpa after he passed away so no previous info on it. It came with a pretty neat holster that flips oped when pressing a button.

    Got a photo? Both sides?

    Did you open the cylinder and look around the crane, especially on the frame under where the crane is when the action is closed?

    The holster sounds like a Berns-Martin speed holster - the front of the holster opens up like a clamshell when the release is tripped.

    Sure you can find the serial number. Just open the cylinder and look on the inside of the frame. Be certain you retrieve the number from the frame rather than the crane (on which the cylinder rides). It will be a six-digit numeral no earlier than roughly 500000 and no later than about 925000. The Official Police was produced in it's classic form from 1927 to 1970 when the Colt Mark III action was introduced with it's completely new design featuring a coil spring main spring.

    The Official Police model named soldiered on for a very short time, made on the Mark III action but those are scarcely ever encountered. The proper classic Official Police has the same V-Spring action as does the Python and a whole lot of other classic Colt models.

    They're good 'uns.

    The holster sounds like a clam shell type.

    Photos are appreciated.

    Smitty;

    While I was long-winded, you got in and provided the information.
