I can see the physics of it. Imagine a pistol with a very light trigger pull. The child bounces on the mattress which compresses the handle side angling the barrell up if just in the right spot and if there is a button or spring or something else near the trigger which can catch it, boom. But it seems like it would take a "perfect storm" of things to come together to happen.

But they'll probably put some sort of spin on it to call for some other piece of useless garbage legislation.

Maybe Myth Busters could figure this one out; I agree a distinct odor of fish to this one.

My ears are ringing from the sound of the BS detector going off.

And exactly who gave the full details of that incident to the cops? Let me guess... maybe the moron who was actually handling the gun when it went off?

Too little in the article to know what happened. If it fired from beneath the mattress there surely is damage to the mattress and trajectory through the mattress to bolster the story.

I would like to think that the police who investigated were minimally competent and double checked the story for corroborating forensic evidence.

That would be a seriously freakish and incredibly rare incident if it did (in fact) happen at all.

Perhaps we should all submit that suggestion to them (the more of the same suggestion, possibly the more chance of them testing it).

Another one of those "the gun malfunctioned and went off all by itself" stories! Yah, right! Smells like rotten fish to me. Especially coming out of Chicago!!!! BTW, what was a 5 year old kid doing up "jumping on a bed" at 12:32 AM, ( like, 0032 hours military time) anyway????

Okay, here's my choice of beliefs:
    1. Girl jumps on bed and gun under mattress goes off, hitting her.
    or
    2. Girl finds mama's boyfriend's gun under the mattress,
and while playing with it, shoots herself.

    I'm going with 2.
