BBC News - Test firing a Spitfire machine gun

"TV historian Dan Snow test fires a machine gun from a WW2 Spitfire which has been recovered from a peat bog in Co Donegal where it had lain buried for 70 years."

This interesting tidbit was provided for the members of a small private forum of which I am a member. Following is all the forum member had to add.

"One of John Browning's great works was dug out of a peat bog after 70 years and test-fired. No one here will be surprised by the result."

Nice machine gun!

How ironic that the Brits brought this old BMG back to life, given their political distaste for firearms.

So now I can appreciate peat bogs for more than just Scotch whiskey!

They sure as hell don't make um liked they used to.

Interesting, I thought the guns on the Spitfire were 50s but from the looks of the rounds they were 30cal, still took a lot of German fighters out of the sky though.

Yep, .303 cal.

This article prompted me to do a little research, and found the Brits and even the Krauts used .30 cal MGs. The ME-109 had 4 MGs but added a 20mm cannon which fired through the prop spinner. Apparently the Yanks were the cowboys of the sky with our big fifties...

Pretty cool video.

Browning Model 1919. I paid a pretty penny for mine and it is worth every bit. All except I can go through $1000 worth of ammo in less than two minutes.

It usually rides mobile as well, and only comes out on special occasions.

Maybe because they were in a trench.To be perfectly honest,When I was trained to shoot the M16 and S&W model 15,M203 grenade launcher,M60 machine gun etc,in the Military in the 70's,we never wore eye protection,only hearing protection.
