Looking for an inexpensive .22 for a new shooter

My girlfriend went to the range with me yesterday and showed an interest in shooting. I would like to get her a .22 pistol for her birthday that won't break the bank. Any suggestions? Are the Phoenix and Bersa reliable?

I had a bersa .22 years ago and LOVED it. Very nice and reliable shooter.

Buds has a Ruger 22/45 22lr for $267 free shipping,There is a S&W 22A semi auto for $288 free shipping,or a S&W M&P 22 for $361 free shipping,I know the first 2 are great guns and shoot great, the M&P22 is new on the market, but if it's anything like their centerfire guns I would buy one in a heartbeat

I have a Ruger 22/45 mkiii. It is true what they say about how annoying it is to clean. It gets easier though, and I really don't clean it that often anyway. :)

It's a great gun. I love firing the thing and it's so cheap to buy ammo. I buy the cheapest "jacketed" (it's usually plated I think) ammo I can find, which is often about $20 for the Federal bricks of 525. The last four bricks only had 4 failures.

I own and love my Ruger SR22, sweet little shooter, and I can shoot it all weekend for about $20.

Ruger SR22. I love my Neos, but the SR22 feels more like a "real" pistol rather than a target pistol.

So you would recommend the SR22 over the 22/45 Mark III?
