Many news outlets are reporting that the mayor is looking to prohibit CCW during the convention. state preemption is stopping him but he's making it a political football at the expense of a Republican gov and convention.

City council want guns banned at GOP convention - Florida Wires - MiamiHerald.com
The Secret Service has previously stated that no one but on-duty law enforcement officers will be allowed to carry guns inside the Tampa Bay Times Forum, the site of the convention. Tampa officials want that ban extended to an area that covers downtown and a few surrounding areas.

Inside the convention area, no big deal...all of downtown is a big deal.
Downtown today, all of the city tomorrow...

Ret - while I hear you, I am not sure I agree.

Is the convention center normally off limits under FL law? If so, then yes, I agree with you. If not, it seems that we have a 10th amendment issue if the feds are busting in and changing the law at their whim.

If, OTOH, the state Legislature agreed as a predicate to get the convention that they would change the law for the time the convention was in town, while I would disagree with the state's priorities, it would not be a 10th amendment issue.

I suspect that there was not an agreement by the state legislature that their laws would be changed which means there is a 10th amendment issue at stake - certainly outside the convention center and, if the center is not normally off limits, inside it as well.

This 10th amendment issue is brought to you by the SCOTUS. Had they not stated that states are allowed to regulate (infringe) firearms to a degree, this would not be a state issue and the 2A would simply prevail - which, of course, would not allow the SS to do what it is attempting to do here. (Ever notice the initials for the secret service have been used in other places?)

Looks like the Gov has told the city to pound sand as he is not giving them a waiver of the CCW laws. Good on him. Still not clear if the SS has basically federalized the "convention zone" or not, but my bet is yes.

Gov. Scott: No downtown gun ban for GOP convention

TAMPA, Fla.—Florida Gov. Rick Scott has refused a request to prohibit the carrying of guns in downtown Tampa during the Republican National Convention this summer.
Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn had written to Scott asking for an executive order that would override state and federal laws allowing people with concealed weapons permits to carry firearms. He and other officials are worried about people toting guns in such a politically charged atmosphere.

But in a letter dated Tuesday, the Republican governor elected with tea party support said banning guns in all of downtown would infringe on citizens' constitutionally protected rights to legally arm themselves.

Scott wrote "it is unclear how disarming law-abiding citizens would better protect them from the dangers and threats posed by those who would flout the law."

A refreshing approach I must say. It seems he is actually concerned with the safety of the private citizens. Many politicians would be looking to protect themselves, other government workers and public officials. When protecting the citizens you allow them to remain armed so that they may protect themselves. When protecting the government and its workers you take away the arms of the citizenry as it is to hard to tell which of them are good and which are bad.

The Governor is putting the safety and freedom above that of the government. Not something we see everyday.

Rick Scott has really been a pretty good "common sense" kind of Governor. Very much pro-gun, and keeping his promise to the NRA.
Other than his caving in and appointing a "special task force" to review Florida's SYG law.
