    Did I over react?

    History
    • Next door neighbor boy (maybe 6 years old) is known for harrasing our dogs, throwing rocks at our dogs, kick the fence etc.
    • Our dogs have ended up with wounds that appear to be caused by BB and or pellet guns.
    • We have tried to talk to his parents and get shruggs "he is a kid" and once was told in a less than nice way (with a swear word) to get lost.

    Situation

Our kids (and dogs) are outside playing in the sprinkler, and "the boy" comes out with his "BB Gun", pumping it up, and discharging it in his yard. Immediately we are concerned, but nothing we can do as it is in his yard, suspecting what may happen I grab our camera and sure enough he sits at the side of his yard at the fence, points it through the fence into our yard and discharges it while my kids and dogs are playing in the sprinkler.

My camera was ready, so I actually started rapid shooting while he did this and caught it all "on film" (okay, the SD card in the camera). I yell in my most threating voice that he will NEVER ever point that into our yard again. "The boy" runs and hides.

I then called the police to report the situation, due the history of our dogs having BB/Pellet gun wounds. The office arrives, and I explain the history, our desire to NOT get anybody in trouble or start a neighbor war, but was concerned. The officer went over to the neighbors and discussed it with them, reminded them of the city ordinance that you could not discharge firearms/air guns/paint guns/etc. in town, and that we didn't want to get anybody in trouble but were concerned. He did see the gun and stated it did look like a .22 LR. The family informed him that it was a non-functioning air rifle/toy, (It sure lets out of shot of air with some force, so not sure how it is non-functioning).

Anyway, did I overreact in calling the police?

The advice I would give you was the exact same as the actions you took. As the officer said, pellet/bb guns are illegal to shoot in most cities. This is especially serious when your children and dogs were outside. Handled perfectly.

I don't think you'll be seeing that kid with a BB gun anymore.

I'm gonna go with no what with the history you provided. Had you not talked to the parents about it before I would say yes.

Better to call the police now, than to wait until one of your children gets their eye put out by a shot from the bb gun. If it starts a neighbor war so be it. Your responsibility is to your family, not your neighbor. If he does it again, I would call the police again and again and again. Keep good notes.

As I read it, he was saying if I had NOT talked with his parents, he would have suggested that first, but since I had talked with his parents, he agrees with my actions.

If it happens again, I'd sign a warrant for the kid. Parents have to go to Family Court, or whatever you call it in MT, they might keep a better eye on him.

No you didn't over react, The kid is a nuisance & future criminal IMO.

I have neighbors on one side that are just so common & have been a major pain for many years to the extent we now have 24 hr surveillance cameras.

The woman once made a false claim to 911 that I threatened her with a gun all because my wife called the police after 15 yrs of trying to talk to them about their poodle breeding farm that barks at all hours. Luckily our Local Police don't shoot & ask questions later. Needless to say she almost went for the ride she was trying to send me on.

It's still there. I just misread his post. Maybe I was just having a senior moment - although I know that nobody else here ever does that.

Sounds to me like you'll have to be calling on the kid again. Parents like his don't take the hint.
