Thought the defecation was going to hit the ventilation

So... I had just gotten out of the shower and was getting dressed. I had JUST put my G26 back on. I'm standing in my bed room and I hear "JAKE!! JAKE!! HEY! JAKE!" People yelling someones name in my neighborhood isn't exactly new but seeing as how my name is Jake this was a first for me. The guy was not yelling in what I would refer to as a friendly manner. He sounded quite angry. I look out my bathroom window that looks into my back yard and saw (no offense intended to anyone that fits this description) what I would consider to be the stereotypical redneck. 300 to 350 pounds, camo hat, carhart overalls, scruffy beard, etc. And the guy is standing in my back yard screaming my name and waving his arms around.

Now, I have had a previous run in with the good folks from the local chapter of the Ku Klux Klan. It was what made me start taking carrying on a daily basis seriously. The first thought I had was "Great, round 2..." The second thought I had was "You have NO idea how big of a mistake you have made". So I grab my 870 out of the safe, check it, and call the police. I tell the 911 dispatcher "There's a man in my backyard screaming my name, he doesn't sound very happy" The dispatcher says "Ok, lock your doors, a officer is on their way" As a side note, my city has amazingly fast police response time. I think it's because nothing really ever happens and when they DO get a call they are just thankful for something to do. By this time the shouting had moved to my front yard. I tell the dispatcher "I would be more worried about his safety than mine" As I am on the phone with the police I hear "JAKE! SIT!" Huh? "SIT!" Ug, this guy is yelling at his dog.... I tell the police "Never mind, it's some guy who's dog got loose that apparently shares my name and is running around my yard" She asks me if I would like her to call animal control and I tell her "Naw, I think I got this"

I hang up with 911, lean the 870 beside the front door and walk out on my front porch. What do I see. A pit bull. Ug... Why do people keep buying these things? Seriously. There are plenty of dogs out there that are great guard dogs but don't have the horrible reputation. They also run a lot less of a chance of catching a load of 0.0 buck if they wander into someone's yard un-invited because they think it's going to eat their kid. I don't personally have a kid but My neighbor has a 8 year old daughter and I'm good friends with her daddy and I wouldn't think twice about putting a bullet in something that I thought was going to hurt her.. NOW... Before you start with me... I worked in a boarding kennel for 2 years when I was a kid. I know that it's more about nurture more than nature when it comes to dogs. But that being said, certain dogs DO have certain dispositions.

So, I walk back into my house and grab the 1/2 pound of turkey ham my mom had given me last time I was at her house (I hate the stuff, I have no idea why she insists on buying it). I had actually almost thrown it away but for some reason I hung on to it lol. I walk out on my front porch again and tell the guy "Look, first off, stop yelling at the dog. It's not going to help. Secondly, give me the leash" Then I throw the dog a couple slices of turkey ham. It eyes them and then scarfs them down. So I throw it a few more and it does the same thing. I then drop some at my feet and the dog gingerly trots over, eats the ham and rolls over on it's back with it's mouth open and its tongue hanging out the side of it's mouth. So I drop the last few slices in it's mouth, lean over and hook the leash on" The guy is super appreciative and thanks me profusely. I told him "You made the choice to own a pit bull, your need to take extra care and every precaution to make sure that it is ALWAYS under your control. A lot of people around here would have just shot it" He agreed, thanked me again and left. This leads my to my second point...

KEEP CONTROL OF YOUR SLOBERING DOGS! So far this year I have OC sprayed 3 dogs while out running and it's not even July!. One charged out the someones front door, one jumped a fence and one was tied up but slipped it's collar. I don't know that "He doesn't bite" or "Oh, she's just playing" All I know is that I am being chased down the sidewalk by a animal with teeth and regardless of size it is capable of taking a chunk out of me. Lock your screen door, make sure your dogs collar fit's correctly, make sure the fence is high enough! Whatever you do just keep your dog in your own yard! Sorry.. Rant over...

Glad to hear you just won over a couple of new friends in the neighborhood. Yeah, a good hunk of turkey-SPAM surprise can do wonders.

Wish I'd had a few pieces, back when. A friend's 9mo old rottweiler gave me a belt-level view of the largest set of teeth I'd seen in quite awhile. (Turns out it had been poisoned intentionally by some burglars some months previously [unbeknownst to me], and it was still a bit ornery around new faces.) Those big, sharp, pointy teeth made an impression, though it was really the rippling, bulging jaw muscles that had worried me most, thinking what might have been ...

    That was a good story.

Good story. Nice description of Jake's owner.

Good story sir. I LOVE my pit bull and i know they have bad reps. I have a Chihuahua that would try to kill someone faster than any dog I know. Lol. I know there are a lot of bad ones as well but mine isn't. She is a gorgeous dog and great companion. I just hate that a bunch of friggin idiots treat them like crap and turn them into dangerous animals. Bottom line mine or yours, dogs trying to harm me or mine, it will soon find out if dogs go to heaven. Glad all turned out well. Thanks for the laugh.

Don't get me started on Pit Bulls. I would have let the cops handle it, if not the cops..... the 870. Nevertheless, you did good.

I can remember when German Shepard's got the bad rap, then it was Doberman Pincher's and no its the Pit Bull.

In the 2 prior dogs as with now the Pit Bull it all falls on the owner and not the dog. These 3 dogs as really with all dogs if properly trained and humanly treated they will not be a problem.

You hurt my dog, and you are wrong when doing it = I will have lawyers justifying why deadly force was authorized!

If it was a lab or any other so called "cute" dog you would have giggled like a little school girl when it rolled over on it's back and acted all submissive.

Just because it's a pitbull doesn't mean it can't be just a "cute" as any other dog. You need to treat all dogs equally and not let your foolish stereotyping of a breed to cause you to make a stupid decision. Every dog should be under control and it is the owners fault for not taking it serious.
