This morning the news showed video of people dumpster diving and reports of bodies floating in the water.

I feel very sorry for these people, it really is miserable. Many of the people who live in the high rises are elderly and need food, water and heat.

I think the worst is yet to come. High density housing, anger over the gas shortage, no electric, no way to get food. That place is going to blow in a week or so if FEMA doesn't address these things quickly.

Meanwhile, Bloomberg is getting ready for the NY marathon this weekend. I guess in his mind everything is hunky dorey.
Generators for the runners but few for the people who are hurting. This is NOT going to go over well with New Yorkers who are in a desperate situation.

I don't thing the biggest problems will be looting. The continued food/water/fuel/shelter/power will be more of a problem into next week.

My concern going forward would be the probable water contamination. I hope most people do boil the water and don't assume it's ok because it's out of the faucet.

There is a part of me, the part I'm always fighting against, that likes to hear bad news about NYC. That part of me would like to see the whole place wiped off of the face of the Earth.

Then I think about all of the people that are really innocent, those that didn't choose to live there on their own (like children) and it makes me sad. It's also sad that my hatred of liberalism, it's core values and it's strongholds sometimes causes me to think like a mean and petty 6 year old.

I think you are absolutely right. They shouldn't trust the tap water. Also, imagine what's in that water floating around in the streets...dead animals, rats, rotted food, possibly raw sewage etc. Even walking through it could cause MRSA infections or who knows what. I think there's going to be a huge medical problem in the weeks to come, especially with people packed into an area with little or no sanitary conditions. I hope the POTUS is on top of it and paying attention (inbetween dinners with Beyonce and Jay Z of course)

Yes, read an article about the dead rats. Sounds like a bad recipe for disease.

Anyone depending on FEMA to bail them out is going to get awfully hungry and cold before its over with.

Maybe they can drag a couple of those trailers that are moldering down in LA up to NYC.
From what I understand there are several hundred of them to choose from.

You know, what our country needs is another bureaucratic agency to take care of things. I wonder where we could get one of those...

This is just a taste of what'll happen in big cities, if ever a bad and extended situation happens. Without fuel, fresh water, food, deliveries, ability to travel, it'll start just like we're seeing here ... and only get worse, as folks get more frustrated, desperate, deadly.

Re: SHTF in parts of NY and NJ

There was a clip on the news last night of a woman on staten island screaming "where is the government? They should be saving us"...while I sympathize with their hardship I anticipate that they're going to be quite disappointed in their ideas that the government will save them.

I think everyone needs to consider that the tv folks go to the worst spots and present the worst
possible picture. In reality, only very small areas are severely damaged or affected.

Gasoline pumping when there is no electricity is always an issue after a disaster. It is one
that is fixable ahead of time with modest expenditures and some action by government to
help stations obtain backup--- even to the point of hand pumps; it can be done that way if need
    be.

Electricity distribution is a difficult issue, again partially avoidable with a variety of infrastructure
    improvements.

To put things in perspective, my cousin has a house 4 miles from the South shore of Long Island, and
had no damage to his place, and all is working in his neighborhood.

Yes, places right on the shore were badly damaged, but go inland a short ways and it isn't that bad at
    all.

The financial district in Southern Manhattan is up; trading is happening. People are making it to work.

I'm not saying that many haven't lost homes, been harmed, inconvenienced, etc. I'm just saying
try looking at the big picture, not merely the stuff TV chooses to show you.

Here: Atlantic City's 12 casinos, ordered closed because of Sandy, can reopen immediately. SHTF in parts of NY and NJ

Doesn't sound like the end of the world to me.
