They have 3.6 billion dollars of tax payer cash to pass around and no red tape.

Sweet! Now let's take some of that cash and attitude and spread it around to an embassy or two.

I know this is affecting isolated areas but....a more lot of these folks are going to get pretty agitated if thy aren't already if basic services are not restored soon. That's when it can get really ugly inmho. The casinos and Wall Street have disaster preparation down cold, that is why they can re-open so quickly.

I'm remembering Katrina and a lot of standing around on freeway entrance ramps for extended periods followed by being herded into the Superdome. That's the way the government serves up those who do no nothing more than rely on it for assisitance.

The casinos wouldn't open if they didn't have customers. And customers have to be able to get there.
Which means they are driving or taking the usual special buses that run from The City or Phily
with stops in the populated places in Jersey.

The TV folks made a big deal about the awful damage at the South Ferry subway station. Duh,
right on the water's edge. Meanwhile, the ferry to Staten Island is going again. Construction was
restarted on the re-build of the World Trade Towers.

I'm not saying some folks aren't in a world of hurt. What I am saying is that there is plenty
of ability to move aid to where it is needed, move people from where they can't remain, and
    police/secure what needs it.

If you live in the mid-west you'll eventually see a tornado and if you live in TX you'll see
drought and 112 degrees or more, and if you live in Vermont you'll see blizzards. That's life.

What are you saying here Spuk? Are you saying you'd take the food from someone else, and let them starve? Or would you just kill them before you take their food so they don't have to starve after you've gone?

It almost sounds like you're the reason people shoot looters.

That's the sort of thing upstanding folk face, when riots and looting starts. Such situations affect the down-and-out, the amoral, the on-the-edge, the heartless, and the desperate differently. Another good reason to be armed, always, and as reasonably prepared for utter lunacy and breakdown. 'Cause one never knows who's gonna turn.

Some of what is going on is not being reported.

There are areas where there is no power. There is a cold front moving in with possible snow. People have no heat. They have no food. Many have no water. Many are afraid to leave their houses and apartments. They have no phone service. They have no way to charge their cell phones. Some of them are injured. They have no medical skills and no way to leave and no place to go if they could.
People are already defecating in the hallways of their apartment buildings because they cannot flush their toilets.

They could easily find water and make it safe to drink BUT, they have no self preservation skills.

That all spells panic, chaos, and irrational behavior in my book unless food, water, & warmth arrive ASAP and that does not look like it is going to happen for a while yet.

That all (above) is a potential recipe for trouble, despair, and predatory behavior by some portion of the population to me.

Thankfully Mayor Bloombungler finally cancelled the marathon (because he didn't want to face political suicide) so those three huge generators that were reserved for the media tents, equipment and accommodations can now be put to better use possibly saving some lives.

I really don't see how you think that would happen. Airports are open. Public transportation is
resuming, the highways are open. Electricity is slowly being turned back on; natural gas too no doubt.

There is absolutely ZERO reason why essentials can not be delivered, people sheltered, people moved.
If they can work on Wall Street today, and re-start construction on the towers, as they did,
things aren't all that bad in "the city."

Staten Island is a different issue but it is connected to I-95 and the Jersey Turnpike, and Brooklyn.

    The craziness
you see with gas lines is in or near the affected areas. So, the tv folks show huge lines
at one of the rest stops near the entrance to the turnpike. Big deal. Sure, folks from the flooded area
went where they thought they could get the stuff--without driving another 5 miles.

The damage is extensive along the water but get a little ways away and not so much.

Why should there be any chaos? Except for the folks whose homes were done in, and have no place
to go other than public shelters, I don't think there is that much deprivation. And there will be plenty of help
for those people by Monday; if not already.
