    Opinions : Academy Sport & Outdoors ....

We don't have an Academy Sports & Outdoors in our state. However, one is now opening next week in our area, the first in the state. Interested in knowing any opinions out there ya'all may have that have had experience with them.

It's interesting that we've had only more typical local shops, etc. and some sport shops (although had little fishing or gun items). ..... and in the last couple of years they found this market.
We got a Gander Mtn (about 15 miles away), then this last year Cabela's opened a store (about 30 miles away), and now Academy is opening one (much closer to where I am).

I used to buy cases (1,000 rounds) of 9 mm Blazer FMJ for $100 there (Texas). They used ammo as "loss leaders" sometimes. Otherwise, OK.

Strange that the Washington Metro area doesn't have an Academy nor a Cabelas.

You think they hate Walmart... See what happens if a Cabelas tries to move into the area anywhere north of Fredricksberg. MD might win the 'Shall Issue' fight. VA is good. D.C. is a lost cause (just ask Ms. Miller of the Wash Post).

Academy is ok, I guess. The one by my house doesn't have that much in the way of ammo choices, and I am not wild about their policy of no dry firing of weapons. I want to feel the trigger before I make a gun purchase, especially if it's a pistol.

Ehh, not so bad. Visit them every once in awhile when I'm driving through a state that has em. Bass Pro is my favorite, then Cabellas, Gander and a few other places before I'd get to Academy.

took a kimber 8400 in to have a scope mounted the sales staff bent over backwards to help even though they didn't have the right mount, same price for ammo as walmart, guns come and go there very quickly, quality store I shop there frequently and will continue to do so..check for doorbuster sales on Black friday I picked up a 40 cal for 289 around 9:00 am after my wife shopped me out..

They're alright in my book. Have a good selection of ammo, especially for shotguns and rifles, but are always low or out of stock of the cheap pistol ammo. Their prices on ammo are a little high, always more than wally world (which is where I go because the cheap stuff is always stocked). Their gun prices are a little high but thats to be expected for a big retail store, but man that gun counter is ALWAYS busy. Although they do have some on sale from time to time that are priced pretty well. I'll go to buy targets and shotgun ammo and other accesories sometimes and every once in awhile go graze the gun counter. I did get my maverick shotgun there on sale for a good deal.

I buy ammo at Academy quite often. They had 9mm and 40 cal amm during the shortage when you could not buy ammo anywhere else. Walmart is a little cheaper but does not have 9mm all the time. Our Academy has a huge selection of ammo for rifles and pistols. I find their prices on guns quite reasoneable and have purchased pistols there. I like to shop there.

They are ok. You can find good deals, there. They don't keep things in stock as well as they should. Sometimes they'll run out of a product and not stock it for months. Ammo prices are usually pretty good. They can have good prices on guns - but you won't get to feel the trigger (as was mentioned earlier); all of the guns have trigger locks.

It's kinda like... If Walmart and Bass Pro made a baby, you would get Academy.

When I was closer to one I used to buy target ammo there as well as a bit of paintball stuff. They were my stop for soccer gear usually as well.

We have an Academy Sports and a Gander Mountain almost next door to each other. Academy has good prices and they have bicycles, shoes and team sports items as well (baseball, softball etc). Gander has only hunting fishing camping. Gander is usually a little more expensive and I prefer them for firearms.

As others have said, Academy is good for ammo and other stuff. They have a good selection of gun cleaning items and good for targets. I try to stay away from the gun case because the guys behind the counter are not really helpful or knowlegable and they and the customers have ZERO safety habits.
If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.

    Howdy!

I find Academy has the best prices on ammo and often guns, they even beat Walmart prices.
