Dick's Sporting Goods is driving me nuts!
I've wanted the Mossberg Maverick 88 for over a week, and the closest store doesn't have their FFL renewed and can't sell guns yet. The other one doesn't have any in the 18.5 Security model I want, and I don't think they'll let me hold a gun they don't yet have.
I call there again and he says it could be in tomorrow, wednesday or friday. But unless someone is working in the hunting lodge after I get out of work, there's no way I can go get it!
I want a raincheck from them but they won't give one for guns, it's frustrating as hell. Maybe it's just not meant to be.

Oh I know, I handled one for about 15 minutes and actually liked it a lot (full size M&P not as much) and then the guy says "It's for Connecticut, can't sell it to you". I was bummed.
I live kind of near the factory too, sigh. I also want the Ruger SR9 and SR22 and those are tough for me to find too.

I never found a compelling reason to do much business with Dick's, at least not in the gun realm.
Try the Davidson's "Gun Genie" feature. I entered a zip code near Boston and found a dealer with a Maverick 88 slug gun for $205... YMMV.

Boston is 2 hours from me sadly as well.

Not sure where you're located, but you might see if Davidson's lists a dealer in a neighboring state, if that's closer. AFAIK MA residents can buy a long gun in any state, as long as you have a valid FID card or either flavor of LTC.

Yeah I believe I can, NH/VT would be a good choice to find one. We'll see how it goes tomorrow, I'm going to my usual small gun store and then Dick's.

You do know, that there is thing called the 'internet', and some businesses do overnight or next day shipping. Just sayin..... But then again, that depends on your state laws and possible $$ charges to have it shipped to an FFL so they can just hand it to you.

For one, Dick's can't do that. For two, I want to hold it first. If I just wanted to find the gun at any price without holding it I could order it.

Doesn't walmart carry the Maverick?

In my brief time buying firearms I have learned that looking for the cheapest deal is the most time consumin and frustrating thing I have ever done. I like ease of doing business. My time and sanity are worth it to me to make the purchase where it is easiest, not necessarily cheapest. That's just me and my situation though.

I still go into the old "Galyan's" (Dick's) store for some accessories. I still know some of the sales people, who tell me they have lost a fair amount of business over the change.

Completely unrelated to the post but the mention of this particular store made me think of something that happened years ago.
I was at class in Virginia. There were a couple of people there from other countries including a South African Police Officer. We had the occasion to go out on the town one night and ended up at a shopping mall where a Dick's Sporting Goods was located.
The mall was quite crowded and we were all laughing and joking. As we came down the escalator the SA officer noticed the sporting goods store and in a very excited, loud voice tells us all "Oh I love Dick's". Immediately everyone fell silent as patrons stopped what they were doing to look in his direction. Not realizing the context they were taking it in he stated "What? I do love Dick's".
As we passed and older man and his wife on the opposite escalator he gentleman leaned over and said "Son I don't really care what you like in your personal life, I prefer females myself, but you don't have to tell the whole world about it". Unfortunately for him we still had 5 days left in the class.
"A first rate man with a third rate gun is far better than the other way around". The gun is a tool, you are the craftsman that makes it work. There are those who say "if I had to do it, I could" yet they never go out and train to do it. (WETSU)
