    AMMO for .40 Cal.

Which one is the best for .40 Cal. for self defence and home protection 155, 165 or 180 grain?

If you can recommend good brand then much better.

Though not my primary HD weapons, for SD/HD loads in my .40's I've found Speer Gold Dot, 180grain to be comforting.

What is best is subjective. When I was carrying a .40 I liked the 165 gr Federal HST round.

    AMMO for .40 Cal.

there's a ton of threads on the topic and they mostly come down to whatever reliably cycles through your gun. in 40 at least, the 165 often has a bit more energy then the rest while the 180's track a little straighter due to the increased mass. but it's splitting hairs to be sure. they all penetrate about the same. I carry 165's in Fed HST, Gold Dot, and Ranger T. There's lots of other perfectly suitable ammo though and in the end, I'm sure it will make no difference which brand you pick. I'd happily carry 180's if I couldn't find 165's. I don't see the 155's or 135's very often so I don't normally consider them. They all make holes and drive plenty deep.

Shot placement is everything. 3 or 4 center mass should do nicely be it 40 cal, 9mm, 22 cal HP.
The "which is best" ammo question is self serving by ammo producers.

Well I prefer also a 165 grain, I think the velocity and penetrating capacity is nice not too heavy and not too light.

When it comes to velocity and stopping power I choose 155 grain but when it comes to penetrating capability obviously the 180 grain.

I consider also the brand and my choices are FEDERAL HST, SPEER GOLD DOT, WINCHESTER, CORBON, REMINGTON (but the thing I don't like is that it's not bonded). Right now I bought 20 rounds of GUARDIAN GOLD 180 grain JHP for home defense but I am planning to buy couple of rounds for testing, personal and home defense.

The SPEER GOLD DOT, FEDERAL HST I can't find it here in the Philippines, only HYDRASHOCK but I prefer FEDERAL HST but since it's not available here, my second option is WINCHESTER PDX1 or RANGER-T or CORBON but it's a little bit expensive. REMINGTON, I've seen ULTIMATE HOME DEFENSE and GOLDEN SABER but the problem is that it's not bonded, in some ammo test video you can see a jacket separation that is why I'll stick with other brand first.

I carry Winchester BJHP Q4369. Good price (around $20/ 50 round box), and its what a 3-letter government agency carries.
