With burning ammo, it's the cases that go sailing more so than the bullets. I can personnally attest that a .22 LR case hurts like heck when it smacks you in the forehead.
And no, I didn't throw it in the campfire. Some previous camper left a little booby trap for us.

Yep, with ammo cooking-off in a fire without a chamber to direct the force of the BOOM the cases usually DO travel further & faster than the lead. Physics says the lighter of the two component flies the most distance away from the same explosion.
